Any other first year associates thinking about leaving their firms/Big Law after bonus payouts? I’ve been really unhappy with work-life balance and already want to pivot to a smaller firm/policy/JD-preferred type of work. How do you know if the problem is your firm or Big Law?

It’s biglaw

I think it’s overall biglaw, but can be made even worse by your teams/firm culture

I really encourage you not to fall into the "smaller firms will be better" trap. Sometimes they are, but it's still client service. Lateral to a lower-ranked biglaw firm and you'll go from 2200+ down to a more manageable number. Or go in-house, or to government. Or change practice areas: PE M&A is not the same as fund work.

Last, know that first year you don't get to do the most interesting stuff. That comes later. Hang in there.

Part of the problem could also be you. I mean this in the spirit of tough love and not negativity. Its hard to understand how to set boundaries especially in the beginning (that was me too so no judgement). But so many leave BigLaw and go smaller for big pay cut and then still struggle with WLB because the problem all along was inability to set effective boundaries. So that’s worth thinking about too.

It’s your firm. I love my firm and other than quarter end, I think work life balance as a Junior was achievable. Weeks are long but I have most of my weekends to myself

It’s your firm, its biglaw and it’s your own personality. You should decide which parts of the job you like and which you don’t like and then try to see if the parts you don’t like go away if you go to another firm or leave big law. I will say none of my friends who left big law for smaller firms work less than I do. The ones who left for different roles do, but there are disadvantages there too. I left one big firm for another and it’s night and day. You just need to figure out what works for you and what doesn’t

Im a first year going into second year, in a similar position. At this point, I am very aware that “the grass is always greener” in terms of smaller firms. Some of my friends work less, but not substantially less and not enough to justify the comp cut. My plan is to stick it out for another year, evaluate where I’m at, and see if any other doors have opened or if the work has gotten any better/more interesting.

Servus zusammen,

Maybe some perspective might be of use to me. I’m transitioning out of the service and I’ve positioned myself decently to be competitive in the market. I’ve got two offers from great companies. Biotech and Healthcare, both on the Human Capital Team as an Employee Relations Consultant. I have a graduate degree pursuing a Doctorate, LSSBB, ScrumMaster, SPHR, and PMI-ACP certified. I know this is personal and dependent, but what should I be considering as a commensurate salary?

just ran the numbers on the class of students i started with at ad school in 2018. I dropped out for a full time job at an agency. So did one art director.
3/6 writers graduated (40% dropout rate).
4/22 art directors graduated (82% dropout rate)
Did this happen to your ad school too or is this some weird covid thing?

Help evaluating potential move please. I was at my first firm for 3 years. I got scalped at the start of biglaw hiring craze and it was awful. I honestly made it 6 months and jumped ship. I love my current firm but it’s my 3rd firm in now 3 1/2 years. I did move to explore a different practice area and love it. Trying to get a better understanding of the difference in hour requirements between Big 4 tax and a law firm. I’ll be joining a firm that has a 1850 billable requirement with bonus eligibility starting at 1900. In Big 4 tax I regularly worked 50 hour weeks but had low billables (~30hr per week) b/c there wasnt always work to do and quite a bit of admin. Can you hit 1900 working 50 hour weeks, or are most people putting in closer to 60 hour weeks?
