I have chronic depression and so I’ve come up with a list of “fixes” which help me feel better to get me through hard days.
I categorize them into 3 bucket...
“quick fixes” which take fewer than 5 minutes (make a cup of tea, call my mom, etc)
The “1 hour fix” which includes things like exercise, take a walk, bake cookies, etc
And the “1 hour+” category which includes things like planning/taking a day trip, volunteering to walk dogs at my local shelter, etc.
It may sound even crazier then I already am (😂) but having a ‘project plan’ in place which allows me to figure out how much time I have to implement my solution and then reccomended activities really helps when my brain is feeling the slog of depression.
I love this! So helpful
With how busy our days get, those quick fixes can be as important as the larger fixes
I have an Evernote notebook that I use to “vent” into. Since wfh has begun, I’ve tried to take a walk or just get away from my laptop and pace around as well. If I avoid the anxiety or double down into work, it only gets worse and I end up becoming too controlling and almost always it can be seen /felt by team members. So I make it a point to address it or soothe myself enough in the moment to get on with work relatively calmly, then I dive in deeper after work wraps. That said, there are days where I’m simply sleep-walking. If I can get work done well and the client / team is happy, that’s an accomplishment. Then there are some days where I feel really emotionally adept to manage the anxiety well. Net net, getting better at self-soothing but it took a LOT of work. And therapy.
Recently I had to take medical leave! If you find yourself needing the help I highly recommend it for your mental health.
I started Lexapro recently. Also I have been meditating, avoiding alcohol since the pandemic began, running a lot! Lots of tea and baking as well. I am trying harder than ever to keep myself well, and it seems like a lot of upkeep, but it definitely makes a difference in maintaining sanity.
+1 for meditating! And also finding a good therapist. My therapist has not only helped me get over my depression (5 years ago), but has also helped me succeed in my career. I’m more confident, self assured and better able to deal with stress using what I learned from therapy.
I’ve started meditating - honestly I never thought I would be into something like that but I’ve found it really helps.
I use an app called Balance, and they have a foundations plan that teaches you how to meditate, as well as quick, short meditations around common topics like anxiety. I use them to help me fall asleep when my mind is racing, and to focus when I find myself procrastinating because I feel utterly overwhelmed!
I haven't had success with meditating before but I think it may be worth a try again with how everyone talks it up!
I started Paxil and it’s been a life changing experience. Really regret not looking into it much much sooner.
SSRI, anti-anxiety medication. I’m taking the lowest dosage and it’s made a huge difference.
