In my opinion, it is perfectly appropriate. I don’t know what you consider “too” progressive, but it’s focused on health and safety. I haven’t found anything that was concerning - pretty basic stuff.

Don't have a high schooler but have a number of friends who teach high school in CPS, a few of them at the well-regarded exam schools, a few at charters, and a few at poorly resourced schools on the South Side.
They teach boring stuff like math. Some of them teach English. One teaches history. Two are guidance counselors.
Not trying to be flip or glib, but most of what occurs in schools is straight up, standard education. We talk a lot (I'm a former teacher) and none of our conversations are about how to integrate critical race theory into Calculus.

I really am trying to answer OPs question sincerely-- one thing I learned as a teacher was that you don't do any good when you don't take parents' concerns seriously and at face value.
Another thing I learned as a teacher was that I was way too deep under water just trying to teach my students how to read. I definitely did not have time to think about how to inculcate my political beliefs into them.
Public schools should be educating students on things that hopefully prevent them from needing public services.
Sex education is low hanging fruit — teach students about safe options, contraception, etc. and hopefully it’ll prevent any mishaps. It’s not like we can hide this stuff from kids — pretty much every decent show on TV has sexual elements now
How is teaching sex ed woke?
Because CONDOMS are a LIBERAL CONSPIRACY
SC1 and M1 you obviously don't have kids. No one cares about Sex Ed 101 and teaching about condoms for high schoolers. But i can't get onboard with progressive theories like critical race theory or 1619. It's fine to teach what they are but not the foundation of a curriculum. The same goes with extreme gender theories.
The CPS teachers union is the most extreme in the country. They are the highest paid and strike almost every year. They were among the last in the return to the classroom during the pandemic. Results are overwhelming now about how much that set kids back in the emotional and academic development.

I still don’t know why 1619 is offensive
Just move to the suburbs already
Is it progressive compared to religious-affiliated high schools? Of course. But it is needed I think for all students regardless of where they go. I went to Catholic HS and they taught nothing. Most people were smart enough to use protection but think quite a few could have benefited from it.
Everyone is very worried about it, but nobody wants to talk about it. You’re not alone
Doesn't want to talk about it or can't articulate what exactly they are worried about? Based on this thread it seems like the latter..
CPS got so woke I pulled my kids out and moved them out of state. Too bad, because for a while schools were improving. I can’t comment on HS and didn’t want to find out. Our elementary school kids suffered during the lockdown and the constant threat of strikes plus no homework and equity-based grading said enough is enough. We’re in an area where we don’t have to deal with this, and the city and state lost a taxpayer
I have a relative that teaches at a top 5 cps high school - in sex Ed she is not allowed to say they a female has a baby….and the put a monitor in her classroom of 50+ students to make sure she does t say anything wrong. No resources to get the classroom down to humane side.
I heard they teach some gramer and speling so at least the kids will know the diff between “here” and “hear.” As in: “Johnny, did you here me? You put the condom on hear!”
Can you share what you’re hearing? Sex Ed is standard and basic, and also important. What are you hearing exactly?
At this juncture - between social media and streaming, kids can give parents an education. Teaching young adults how to avoid disease and keep their bodies healthy is essential. Talking with school nurses - even in the burbs- , kids are having sex and making sex videos as young as 8th grade, kids in junior high having anal sex because “ you can’t get pregnant”, the lipstick game at parties, sending nudes. Teachers don’t need to teach what they are learning from their peers. Please talk to your kids, open a dialogue, discuss your values. There is always an option to opt out of certain classes - like the conception to live birth video. (Lol my son came home and said he was NEVER having sex- worked for a while! ) Sex for a few minutes can result in STDs for a lifetime. Nude pics are on the internet forever. If your not horrified enough, check out Only Fans. If all kids could learn this at home, teachers would not have to teach it. It’s a hell of a job to keep kids safe these days - and it takes a village.
How anyone can think teaching humans about how their own bodies and species function is “extreme” is insane to me.
It’s not the job of schools to teach alternative lifestyles - they can get that somewhere else
