Worked in both industry & consulting. Couple considerations. Who your boss is and how you get along with that person is key...also who your boss reports to —the C-suite preferably. Also, when there’s RIFs, which are happening quite frequently in large health systems at the moment — internal consultants are high on that list of first to go. Not advising against it—just important to know how healthcare orgs operate.
Thanks everyone for those considerations! The internal politics and career progression will definitely be important, as well as exit opportunities. Thinking if it doesn’t work out, I can go back to consulting probably.
Could be a great opportunity. Those departments are typically underwhelming from a resource perspective. If your coming from a strong consulting background, my only concern would be the pace, bureaucracy, caliber of people may get frustrating over time. Besides that, it’s a transition I see people make often
Make sure it’s an actual promotion in responsibilities / management. Industry titles are inflated.
It can be a great opportunity. Exposure to top management/leadership is key and if you do a good job the exit opportunities within the health system are solid. It can position you well for an operating role, department head, or finance manager role. Internal consulting will allow you to get exposure to many different areas in the complex health delivery system and help you understand where you want to end up (i.e. surgery, oncology, FP&A, revenue cycle, IT, etc.). Many large systems are becoming increasingly reliant on in-house consulting departments in areas of operations strategy and process improvement. Plus the lifestyle is much better than consulting firms... unless you measure lifestyle by airlines miles.
Hello. What’s title of the role? I need a change
Is it a health plan or provider?
The role would be engagement manager and it is an integrated healthcare company so it’s both.
Think I may be interviewing at the same company! Did you have your 4 hour interview yet?
Not yet. You?
