Before you dive into the architecture and the technical aspect of the product, do understand the business purpose of the product. What are the use cases? Who are the actors/users? Draw use case diagrams then translate those into other technical diagrams. Once you do, confirm and review your understanding via those diagrams w your dev team. So much easier to confirm visuals w developers. I was a former developer and product manager.

I was a former platform PM at a tech startup. And I was in the same boat when I first started. Things were overwhelming at first and I felt like I was a dead weight on my team. But that’s okay bc your team doesn’t expect you to know everything for a while. This gives you time to absorb as much knowledge about the product/platform as you can.

Does your team have any documentation that you can go through? I tend to be that person who hates bothering other people for dumb questions so I try to learn as much as I can on my own until I get stuck. I find that people really appreciate it when you take the time to figure it out yourself first before reaching out. It shows initiative.

Sometimes I even like going through the dev team’s onboarding stuff bc it helps me get into the weeds (figuring out how to set up access to certain environments, backend tables and API’s purely for research and testing purposes). Just ask for permissions to as many tools that you can get your hands on.

Also, figure out who is the dev lead/manager on your team. That person should be your new work bestie. At my last job, I had weekly 1:1’s with the lead SE where I would pick their brain and we kept each other on the same page. Shoot, at my new job, I’m still close with the SE manager on my team. We talk almost every day so that she can walkthrough how she’s solutioning stuff for her team and I can learn more about how the product works behind the scenes.

It gets better - I was convinced the team thought I was an idiot because I was asking so many questions at the beginning but it turned out to be one of the best roles I’ve had. Learned a lot.

Basics? About a month.

Comfortable in my own skin, standing on my own two feet - about 90ish days. Looking back I think a lot of it was in my own head.

Platform PM here. How can I help?

Also, use the opportunity to show them because you have a CS degree you can understand the more technical things easier. I have a CS degree too and sometimes it takes a while for me to understand the bigger picture when it’s much easier for me to understand the individual components of it.

Better understanding the flows of how things work will be helpful, and then break it up from there.

I’m confident in the actual “content” of my work when I put it to paper but I get so lost when I’m asked to transition that work to a presentable slide deck or some other fancier medium that will be shared around. Anyone have any tips on how to get better at this?

I've completed the final rounds for 2 companies: AWS as an L7 Principal PMT and another that's a Series-A funded startup in the HCM space. I expect offers from both: AWS around $400k TC ($250k base + $150k stock) and the startup should be around $300k TC ($250k base + 20% bonus). If comp wasn't the ONLY consideration, what would you do? The AWS role will be an IC role and more hands-on/technical. The startup will be a CPO role reporting to the CEO with a team of about 50 devs+PMs.

PMs, If your company is an AWS shop, they just released two new cool features to Cloud Watch that is extremely valuable to PMs. The first one is Cloud Watch Evidently that allows for non-deployment A/B testing and the second is Cloud Watch RUM for user and performance monitoring. Definitely look into them since I’m sure the red tape involved to use them is a lot less that 3rd party tools.

Hello fellow PM's! I'am currently applying for new remote jobs and a few of the hiring processes include an interview with CTOs. What should I expect from that?

For context, it's not a technical PM jobs and the job description states that they are ok with Business Grads. I can do some python and SQL but mostly for data Analytics (Pandas and Numpy libraries for instance). I can also deal with HTML and CSS for website development but I would say I am a noob at this point.

Thanks a lot!
