It's pretty hard to create a portfolio when a lot of what you do is covered by NDA.
What I did was create a sample project that showed off my knowledge of the process.
This was a requirements doc for a made-up feature, then created a free Jira site and actually broke it down into tasks to show my process through backlog grooming, sprints plannings, etc.
Then it also helps if you can diagram a how you make prioritization decisions.
This helped grab a few offers my last time around and avoided sharing any sensitive information.
A presence is about creating a sense of authority/leadership. In other words, it makes you look more like an expert and that your expertise is valued by others in the industry (followers/readers, in this case). If you put out amazing content that shows a solid understanding of and insight into product management, then go for it. On the other hand, if the site looks like it was pieced together to meet a requirement for being recruited, it might act more as a deterrent than anything. It's all in the presentation.
I'm not a recruiter, but I hire a lot. Recruiters don't care about a personal website. If you get far enough to talk to me and are a designer (not a PM), then I care. But think of it more as a portfolio, not a website.
Yeah, I feel the same. OP, if your intention is to use the website as a way of getting shortlisted, then, I don't think it's going to work. Recruiters don't have time to read a resume, let alone a website. Even if you do manage to reach the HM and undergo more interviews, I don't think anyone will care about how good your website/content is. . Your interview performance is the only thing that will matter.
Now, there's the example of Andrew Chen who a16z reached out to based on the strength of his growth blog... 🙂
I should add that I do blog on PM topics so I get I could add that, but what about you googling and finding that blog vs me shoving it in your face on my personally branded website (when you didn't even ask for it) is appealing to any tech recruiter or hiring manager? I assume the expectation for these is more prominent in a FAANG org than other smaller companies?
I've personally never climbed onto the "personal website" bandwagon. And as far as I know, it's never been an issue from a marketability standpoint.
You can do a digital resume as a portfolio.
Ok glad to hear some similar thinking. Thanks for the input from all. I've got 3 yoe and am confident about my PM ability but not about my interviewing so trying to study up and have come across multiple things recommending them even for PMs which baffled me. (All from former FAANGs. Maybe it was a differentiator 10 or 20 years ago in a Google interview. When I've done hiring (not for pm roles) and they had a personal site it always stank like a person that was either stuck on themselves or trying to make up for what they were lacking it the areas that mattered.
I have a personal website that is basically a lead-in and a link to my LinkedIn profile.
