Any PMs who used to work in account management and switched to PM? What were the pros and cons of moving to the new role? Do you feel that the work/life balance PMs have is better than account?

I switched from account 7 years ago. I miss account haha go figure. I love being “in” with the creatives and feel closer to the actual creative process but miss the leverage and autonomy of an account person, plus the strategy. It’s difficult to act as a PM and not use my account skills. The one pro to being able to do both is client side. Corporate offices eat that shit up. Positions can include “producer” and it’s a hybrid of both, which is how I’ve survived.

I switched to PM at the junior level and found it to be a lot more rewarding personally. I had some bad clients and didn’t like the stress of serving two masters (client and agency). I love having more control since my role is more internal. Much easier for me to manage difficult conversations internally than externally with clients (but that’s just me). I also have a much better work life balance. I build the schedules!

PMs tend to work crazier hours than AMs

In the agencies I’ve seen the line between PM and AM is so incredibly fine. AMs usually assume the duties of PMs

I was an account person who switched to PM and now I want to switch back to account. I wanted to learn about the operations part of an agency, but I could have done that as Acct. person. In my short experience, it all depends on Your personality... can you influence and motivate people to get things done? As a PM, I think it’s more spinning plates (i.e. tasks) to manage, more personalities to juggle, resourcing responsibilities AND making sure things are done on time and within budget. And if something goes wrong YOU are the default to blame. As an acct person, it’s more balancing act between the client & agency needs, and that is difficult as well. It all depends which route you want to take IMO.

Honest question: when you see a job listing like so, is your reaction... A. Good for them insisting on BIPOC; this industry needs more diversity & hiring the same middle aged white folks doesn't cut it anymore. or B. YES, every agency/brand should champion diversity but is it fair, right or even "legal" to overtly dissuade white people from applying? Can't they just "hire the best candidate" regardless of race/gender/etc? I get B but I'm team A because the 2nd ? in B hasn't exactly..worked.

Hi all. To give everyone an update on my best friend, who had recently become my girl friend, we broke up. We were in the middle of our daily Zoom session and midway through, I saw a half-naked man running across the background. I confronted her about it and she did indeed confirm my worst fear that she was cheating. I am sad now.
