Any Product Managers working fully remote? Curious to the pros and cons and observations you may have. Looking to relocate in the next year or so and would love the flexibility to live where I want and not be tied to a city due to job.

I’ve done fully remote gigs even prior to pandemic, and I would say for larger teams, it’s a little more challenging due to the need for cross-functional collaboration, especially during discovery/earlier phases of work with stakeholders and designers and engineers.

Pros are definitely not getting disrupted as often during your day to day work and saving time on commute and flexibility with meals, workouts, naps, time with kids, etc. Also I have more flexibility to hang out with other friends/family after work due to no commute after work. Not to mention being able to work from anywhere or take longer weekends and work from the hotel and not really be bound to the Fri-Sun travel.

Cons are a little harder to manage WLB as work/life blurs more at home, tendency to have too many meetings, and some people just aren’t good at remote collaboration.

Ultimately comes down to maturity and experience of the team. If they’re more senior and self-sufficient, then it’s fine. But for less experienced team members, the benefit of in-person leans to more opportunities for random questions or casual teaching moments.

The set ups that are the most challenging are hybrid ones where you are remote and more of your team is in person. You’re definitely at a deficit in my opinion because building relationships in person (and grabbing lunch, taking causal breaks together, etc) and handling conflict/disagreements are just different remotely.

like

Yup. Fully remote on a team of 8 PMs scattered across the US. Our company prioritizes meeting in person though by way of company or team offsites regularly. Without it we’d be “ok” but it would be hard to build that true camaraderie and get to know everybody as well like many other in person companies do

like

They’re optional; however, if you don’t go you don’t really dial in. It’s not like a “work” function. It’s more of a volunteer event as a company or team, followed by happy hour/dinner, some other event, etc.

Pros: they’re in line with remote working in other jobs such as flexible working, no commute so I save money

Cons: I think I work longer hours than I would if I were in the office. Personal and work life blend into each other. Given PM is a highly collaborative role I think I miss the face time I would normally have with my engineers and designers. Everything needs to be a meeting

I loved working fully remote! But we had to go into a hybrid model and I could see the benefits of working in both in-person and remotely

like

Yup, fully remote here since I started in my current role.
Product and UX team is scattered around the globe.

Love the flexibility, but have to make sure I don't get complacent with my work.

Biggest pro has been not needing to constantly spend on "work clothes" and travel. It's a huge monetary and time saving.

like

My former company was 90% remote. We occasionally met in person to plan/discuss larger projects or initiatives. The company I’ve recently joined is fully remote but holds regular in person get togethers to strengthen working relationships as the human interaction really can’t be replaced. Lots of flexibility with remote but the human interaction can’t be fully replaced. It’s certainly becoming the norm for our position but hybrid and on-site won’t fully go away. Even larger companies in CA are working to bring back full time on-site.

like

I don’t think there is anything better than a remote job. Especially the time and money I save because of staying home. Plus, I can travel. The only downside is that I’m very genuinely free. It’s like you never leave the office.

like

Did for 6 months. Hated it. As a PM you need to interact with so many parts of the business. It was way more challenging than in person. I am also a people person. It wasn’t for me but some people love it. Never again for me though.

like

Been fully remote for the last two years. Bit of a repeat from others but fully remote is easy, hybrid where teams are in the offices or remote is much harder. Conversations happen without you in hybrid roles unless people are really disciplined. Not everything has to be a meeting, chats are more than sufficient for most things. Miro works great for online whiteboarding and collaboration.

I prefer hybrid myself. If you’re looking for a new role, make sure you ask lots of questions. I’ve seen jobs listed as 100% remote, but they define that as 20% in your home office and 80% traveling.

Hello Everyone,

I am in search of a Project Manager role. I have about 4 + years experience managing projects and in consulting.

I am about concluding the google certificate in project management, and one unique think I bring into any team is my strategic thinking and ability to solve problems in record time.

I am based in Canada and a remote role will be great.

I anticipate your responses and recommendations thank you very much.
