South of France. Go to Nice.
Do the 5 days include travel?
Nice was boring. Cassis, Marseilles and aix-en-Provence were way more charming / interesting places to be.
Rising Star
+1 south of France
I have done south of france and loved it. You can fly into Nice and have that as home base or then go to aix as home base and explore a lot. We had a car so that made it easy. With current rental car prices you may want to think about that part. If you prefer larger cities then Lyon is also great. Agree that there’s not a ton of sites to see in Nice, but I loved the city and if you pick a spot to just hang out and drink/eat/watch the ocean it’s kind of magical. Good food, great views, good people watching etc.
If you’re interested in exploring cities by the coast, the trains are great - no need for a car.
Did a couple days in Grenoble a few years ago to catch 2nd to last leg of the Tour de France. Been one of my favorite spots in France ever since.
There was a restaurant called Chez Marius that had some of the best bone marrow I've had.

Just spent about 5-6 days in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Posted up in Aix, doing day trips out to Avignon, Luberon villages and Marseille and then spent a few days in Nice with a day trip out to Monaco. Some thoughts from my trip:
Aix was a great place to post up. Good food and very walkable, pretty central to the region. But note that the high speed rail station is far outside the city and requires a bus shuttle.
I really enjoyed Marseille and wish we had spent more than just a half day there. Chateau d’If was so cool but didn’t get a chance to see all of the city. It gets an unfair rep as dirty/unsafe imo.
The Luberon villages might have been my favorite day. Time your trip/villages to align with the different markets. Gordes and Rousillon were my favorites.
Day trip out to Monaco from Nice is very easy. Note that games don’t get going at the Monte Carlo until after 2pm, but they’ll let you in to tour earlier. Regardless of when you go, there’s an entry fee — if you go for a tour, just tell them that you’ll be coming back for games later so they can scan your passport and let your entry ticket be valid to come back. Otherwise, you’d pay twice.
Overrated places: Avignon and Nice. Both were fine but didn’t feel worth the amount of time spent there. If you do go to Nice, the old town neighborhood does have pretty solid food.
Totally agree with Mont Saint Michel & Grenoble recommendations. Would add driving through D-day beaches if you’re into WWII history!
Mont St Michel is incredible. There are also some other towns nearby along the coast (like St Malo) that would be a awesome day trips that wanted to go to but couldn’t make it.
I also really like Toulouse and Montpellier in the more south west

Yep, the Northern coast is also very cool. Mont St. Michel, WWII beaches, Bayeux, Rouen, Etretat — all worthwhile visits. Would recommend a car to do this
It has been a long time sine I was there but I really liked the Loire Valley wish all of the chateaux.
