Wondering about potential exit/in-house opportunities for different practice groups. I’m currently in big law and choosing between general corporate deal work (M&A/PE) and tech transactions. Do either of these give better in-house (or other) opportunities later on?

We have discovery requests due today. Last week, I drafted all the rogs, rfps and circulated them on Monday for review. Followed up Wednesday. Saw partner in hallway yesterday and he said he'd look at them and they're probably fine. Still nothing today. I know at 2PM I'll be yelled at for something being wrong and forced to request an extension. Is this typical? It happens all the time in my group.

Can anyone provide insight on the work life balance of tech transactions practice area in big law? Is it as unpredictable/ intense as corporate? How often do you work evenings/weekends?

I'm considering a move from my current practice area-- corporate (mostly cap markets)-- to another big law firm in order to transition to technology transactions. I am tired of the intense deal lifestyle and also want to go to tech transactions for better in house opportunities sooner.

What is a good way to find a mentor at my firm? There are a couple attorneys/partners I think would be open to mentoring but how can I make it happen? Is it better to choose a senior associate vs a partner? I often feel like people are so busy I hate to bother them with extraneous things. Has anyone had experience negotiating an origination fee arrangement from a biglaw firm? I’m a junior associate but have brought in ~$250k in annual revenues thus far and have received $0 in compensation for it. I recognize that amount is relatively low but I’m curious if there is an inflection point where it makes sense to ask or that I should have in mind.

Would it be crazy to take off ~3 months to learn a language? I have always wanted to learn a foreign language (but stupidly never committed in college) and know that soon I won’t have the flexibility I do now. I am two years out of school and in the next year or so, I will pay off my student loans and soon after will have a little nest egg I could use to live off of while I do immersion study. Any thoughts?
