Not sure how much terrain will be open that early in the ski season, so I'd base my resort decision on that alone as skiing the same run all day gets boring. You'll probably be best to stick to resorts in the Little and Big Cottonwood Canyons (Alta, Snowbird, Brighton, and Solitude). Note that Alta is a skiers only resort, so don't go if you have snowboarders in your group. I don't think the Park City resorts (Deer Valley and Park City Mountain Resort) are open or worth the trip this early in the season as they are at a lower elevation than the resorts in the canyons. Most of the ski shops/rental companies in the city (Canyon Sports, Christy's, Ski 'n See, and Wasatch Powder House) have discounted tickets. I'd check Liftopia for tickets as well to see if they have better deals. Visit www.skiutah.com for snow reports as you get closer and some additional trip ideas.
