What do you do if the partner who hired you is nice in social settings but awful to work for? And you can’t seem to escape from working for that partner. This partner doesn’t respond to your emails for critical issues that you need input on, doesn’t return your phone calls and voicemails and throws you under the bus in front of the client to blame you for her mistakes. The seniors are too busy. Just joined this firm so lateraling isn’t a viable option.

Lateral interviewer asked me “why my firm wasn’t doing anything to retain me”… honestly, it made me sincerely doubt if I was even worth something.

So are these layoffs really around the corner?

Got rejected for a post-clerkship opportunity at a firm last week, but just received a recruiting email from the firm. My god this whole thing is so stupid. Rant over.

V5, learned today a junior was told she is moving into a different practice group. Does this sound normal?

Do other firms have mandatory department meetings? Practice group meetings?

How to deal with not being staffed on deals and seeing others in your year be staffed? When asking partners directly for work, they refer you to the staffing partners. When asking staffing partners (repeatedly), they say “thanks for interest, we will have something soon.” Weeks and weeks pass by and you’re always below where you should be for billable hours (at this point, very far below). All reviews are essentially perfect and no negative feedback. Extremely frustrating and discouraging.

Friendly reminder that consistently sleeping less than six hours a night is one of the worst things you can do to your body and will literally shave years off of your life.

Your physical health is more important than any job. Take care of yourself.

I’m so exhausted. A couple weeks ago, I closed a huge deal, some smaller ones after and was really looking forward to my one week leave. Come my week on leave, the client on another massive file (early stages, undrafted docs) decides they want closing to take place on the day I’m back from leave. My covering assoc 3 years more senior than me struggled with the complexity of the file and I had to run the file during my leave.. it sucks to not be able to enjoy leave planned months in advance

Anyone else get used to wfh with their family/in another state and now your firm is “seriously” returning to office. Not much to this post just 🥹

Received a windfall and don’t need to work for money again. Want to quit my toxic BL gig right this moment but I am handling a handful of clients on my own who need a ton of help getting their affairs in order + have closings pretty much every week through year end. Responsible/not burn bridges thing to do would be to give notice now and finish out the year but now I have 0 motivation to do anything other than to rent a beach house and relax

CA attorneys, what's a trial call? If I have a date/time for a trial call in a case, does that mean that day is the first day the trial is set for?

What happens once we’re approaching partnership toward 7th or 8th year? What if you don’t make partner? Are most firms “up or out”? If so, how can I ever expect to suddenly have a book worth millions to support making partner? I like working at a firm and don’t really want to go in-house, but I just don’t see making equity as a likelihood.

Anyone else having a shitty day/week? Just wanted to commiserate/vent! 3rd yr associate feeling overwhelmed by deals (in both number and responsibilities). I've slept 5 hours since early Monday but still super behind on everything. I was just asked to do a basic task (a copy/paste job) that even the summer could do but I did myself, and messed up twice on the same, simple task. I'm mortified.

I am going to cuddle my dog, cry a bit and figure out how to organize the 5 deals that are on 🔥 now.

I recently lateraled to big law from a medium to large sized firm. I was generally very happy with the people I worked with at the previous firm and moderately happy with the work I was doing. I left because I was concerned about the viability of the firm, but I really hate my new firm. People aren’t as nice as I’m used to, no positive reinforcement, etc. My old firm told me I was always welcome to come back. How long do I wait to go back if that’s ultimately what I decided I wanted to do?

What is the capital contribution to become a partner at big law firms?

Why is it that being an attorney is the only career where you’re not allowed to say what you do for work, just as anyone else would, without people thinking you sound braggadocious/pretentious?

Who here has great work life balance? How many hours do you do annually? Do you take vacation? How many hours a day? When can you log off?

Career decision time - I hold an offer from a firm paying 60% more than current plus signing bonus.

Current firm are asking me to stay saying they will give me the support and deals that I have been asking for.

The new firm is risky in terms of business model and reality of partnership is slim, plus a huge challenge getting clients as they are not a real 'name' in my market.

Very split on what to do here...

Seeing that the compatibility of Marxist views with working in big law has been a major discussion point, here’s my take:

I strongly believe that capitalism and eternal growth is doomed to fail, and to end capitalism as quickly as possible, capitalism should be intensified.

Where does that happen? Through big law! I could quit, become a weird activist only my own echochamber listens to, or work to self-destruct capitalism while living a financially secure life myself.
