Any recommendations for CA bar study materials (books, courses, etc)? I’m taking the attorney exam in Feb and appreciate all tips. Thanks!

Barbri and baressays.com, make sure you spend someone time on memorizing rules for community property, California civil procedure, and California evidence

Agreed. The holy trinity: an online prep course, baressays, and adaptibar (if you want MC as practice for memorizing rule application)

like

Themis has an attorneys exam only course.

I used that and Mary Basick's essay book (get the new edition) and felt well prepared.

GL!

Mary Basick’s essay book was helpful for me too. During the last week, I just read thorough the issue list and highlighted things that I couldn’t write about.

like

Adaptibar. Start early and be consistent. Immensely helpful. Everyone I know who used adaptibar passed the first time despite having dismal scores on their platform.

I think the attorneys exam isn’t multiple choice it’s just essay/performance test

I work small (tiny) law. I make mid-100s, so not great salary, but my firm is so laid back. If I bill 1000 hours, that's fine (we were a remote firm before COVID made it cool). Compared to all my peers getting crushed under 1800+ billable requirements, I've got severe imposter's syndrome. Did I do something right or have I set myself up for failure by avoiding the pressure cooker? (I was at a firm for 2 years that was 1800+.) Curious as to thoughts/experiences.

Started at a new firm 5 months ago and I still don’t have a full workload and because of that my billing sucks. I’ve reached out to my supervising attorney, 2 partners, and even looped in someone from admin just to see if she knew if anyone needs help. I specifically say things like “can I take some work off your hands? I need more billable work” and I get a few small things but still behind on my total billables. One of the partners talked to me about my billing but I just feel stuck. Cont’d

Controversial opinion: if a firm has a billable requirement of 1800 hours or more, it shouldn’t be able to advertise the job as having any paid time off. It’s not PTO, you literally just have to make up those hours somewhere else, like nights weekends and holidays. You’re not “off”, because ultimately you’re still working the equivalent of a full week every week for the entire year.

Anyone else who feels that they want to step into the more analytical/executive/operational/financial side of business?

I feel that as a corporate lawyer, you’re mostly doing the necessary details to carry out someone else’s decisions (= EG the boring part of business). The most "strategic" advice you give is perhaps advising on a choice between transaction models.

Would only a law degree and big law transactional experience be sufficient to go into more traditional business roles?
