Find a T460s or something similar and max out the memory. You won't need much in the way of CPU or graphics card horsepower for hash cracking, but you will want to run VMs on the system.

My pentesting machine is a refurbished Thinkpad. Not sure if that's a thing in the US but where I live there are several websites where you can buy used machines that have been fixed and have warranty. They're way cheaper than new ones but are just as good.
