I don’t think the food is bad but it can be expensive
In Reykjavik, definitely plenty of good restaurants, they just cost more. First time I went as a budget traveler having meals under $20 essentially meant Thai, pizza, Mexican, hot dogs . Second time I went with more money and places like Perlan or 3 frakkar were great (but the entrees are like $40-50).
Outside of Reykjavik the options are certainly more limited, so you may need to have some gas station sandwich meals between large towns (but these are actually pretty good).
