Any resume tips for Big 4 employees? How much detail should one go into (clients, ratings, roles, etc)?

Ratings, roles, type of projects, but definitely no client names on your resume. Neither your current firm nor a next would appreciate that.

I meant it in terms of things that are verifiable -- previous employers, period of employment, salary, school, GPA, etc. In terms of projects that you work on, you can expect them to ask about it in the interview (I once interviewed someone who talked a big game about financial analysis, but based on his responses to my questions I could tell he didn't know what he was talking about) -- remember that this is a profession built on people who know how to dig. Basic rule of thumb is that anything on your resume is fair game.

@pwc2 Agree with all of your statements✌🏽️

Don't lie. They do very thorough background checks, especially on experienced hires.

@PwC 2 - what do you mean exactly? how would HR know exactly what kind of work I did on various projects?

Typical guideline, your résumé should be a list of your achievements not your experience. Also it should include measurable results (e.g trained 15 employees..., worked with x number clients of Fortune 500 clients in the meat packing industry improving accounting processes by..., etc.)

@BakerTilly1: I mostly disagree with that, but I'll admit that that is the most common advice given to candidates. Really a resume should be the best fair representation of the candidate, which may be measured in experiences, achievements, or something entirely different. The last thing I want to see is a resume that looks nothing like the applicant.

@pwc2 if you only list experience and have no measurable results or achievements, it looks like you don't add value and it's more likely you didn't live up the requisites of your role. If anything it's harder to filibuster specific results than generic statements

@BakerTilly2: Disagree. Past success is not indicative of future success, nor is past lack of success indicative of low potential for success. I'm interested in people with whom I can create value, and prettying up a resume with 'achievements' that aren't even really bragging rights just doesn't get me there. Some of the most valuable experiences that I and my team members have had never resulted with a ribbon or trophy, but they're far more telling of the people that we are than some guy's trying to take credit for what was likely a team effort.

@pwc2 You can talk about the results of your work without discrediting or stealing credit from your peers. Mainly was influenced by this article in my statement hbr.org/2014/12/how-to-write-a-resume-that-stands-out

@BakerTilly1: Still respectfully disagree. Although I agree with many of the things in this article, it's still just an opinion piece written by someone with two ivy leagues on her resume.

@BakerTilly1: Fair to say that we're just on the market for different candidates? For us to agree to disagree would actually be most representative of how it is for an applicant applying to different employers out in the real world methinks.

It's interesting that after SOX, all B4 except Deloitte sold their consulting arms, and then rebuilt it by purchasing Strategy& and Parthenon, and now EY is spinning off its Audit practice.

In UK, regulators ordered all B4 to separate audit practice so other B4s might see how it works in the UK and try to implement worldwide as well.
