Any senior or ACD creatives out there who made it through their career without a dedicated partner? I feel like I’m missing out by not having one, and also that this is a big drawback of in-house.

Yes. I’ve had a million partners. It can hold u back I guess, depending on the situ. But not usually. I’ve only had one partner that I didn’t jive with.

It helps to be flexible too. Being co-dependent on a partner can also hold u back.

Never had a partner. Always have a good time. Just grab people. Brainstorm. Make it happen. Become the partner of all your peers dreams. Then move on and sap the creative energy from your next victim. Also get into an agency, in house is where creative departments go to die mediocre deaths.

Never had a dedicated partner. In recent years I’ve found myself partnering up with the strategy head more than another creative.

Wasn’t always an ECD.

I think it’s harder for ADs to move up without a partner. CWs still get invited to throw in concepts alone or are given an AD to comp them up for them. ADs are just treated as designers when they are solo.

AD start throwing out copy too. Don’t fall back on those weak lines we hear often “I’m not a CW so...” I’m a CD and proof you can do it, speak up—ask to be invited or show up with your ideas anyway.

Every agency I’ve worked at mixed up partners for almost every project. It hasn’t held me back at all!

like

I’ve found it to be the opposite. Partners not ready to move up when you are. So I bailed. And it’s always worked out.

I’m in house and we do primary partners but also lots of cross pollination. Works well.

Yep. Senior/ACD writer here. I’ve had a number of partners but not a dedicated one throughout my whole career.

While it’s nice to have an evergreen buddy, it’s also nice to be on your own and learn how to work with different people from different backgrounds.

It ain’t marriage pal or palette. If you get good stuff done together, you find a way to repeat the joy. If not: Darwin.

I haven’t had a steady copywriter an over a year. It’s very frustrating. Especially when it holds up projects and production work. Unfortunately it’s out of my (and CD’s) hands and has been coming down to scopes.

My partners have lasted 1-2 years max so far.

I’ve only had a dedicated partner for part of my time at one agency. Every other place I’ve worked with different people regularly. It hasn’t held me back but there are times I did want to continue working with one person given our chemistry. Either way, I don’t think not having a partner is something to sweat.

I've had a different partner at every agency I've been to, and two agencies without a partner.

Never had an official partner. Doing just fine.

Same same x2

Haven’t had a partner since I was an AD and left big agency 10 years ago. Agencies/creative depts outside of big holding, don’t care about the traditional roles as much. If you’re an AD, work on “writing” quick copy that helps sell your ideas and gets the point across. Be willing to work with others to develop copy if you struggle and lean on your superiors. You will get stronger/better over time.

I like working with different partners. Look at it this way. The more writers you get along and do good work with, the more advocates you have when you’re looking for work some day. If you’re ever freelance and get a call for a team, if your regular partner is busy you’ll have options. Plus they have their own networks and will bring you in on jobs. I wish I knew MORE writers.

I had a partner when I was Jr., but it been over 10 years.

Do you typically share your salary or salary expectations with recruiters on the first interview? I’ve had instances where the interviewer flat out tell me the range of salary band via email even prior to initial interview. I think this is a great way to set expectations from the get go and will save both parties time - but some companies like to play the “game” and get you to share numbers first, which I find very annoying. What have your experiences been with salary expectations?

Hey everyone! I need your help: I’m relocating to NYC. I’m from Europe.

First month and last month? First month and a deposit? Frist month, deposit and agency fee?
Considering that I do have a proof of income (a FT contract), but no credit history/score.

Hey fellow fish. I’m wanting some reference to an eclectic editing style that incorporates a bunch of filmic styles into the narrative. Not in a Womb Stories way, but more in an Uncommon B&Q Build a Life way. The reference I’m thinking of cuts away to vintage black and white footage and even old cartoons. I just can’t for the life of me remember what it was for. Any suggestions would be massively appreciated!
