Any suggestions for interview questions to ask a first-time manager? I’m applying for a potential role, and the Hiring Manager (potential boss who I would report to) has never had any direct reports. I’m not sure what to ask them to find out if they would be a micromanager or a bad boss. The questions that I’ve seen online all start with “Tell me about a time when …” but there are no such times!
Can you afford to let this opportunity go? If so, re: micromanagement, I’d just be candid and say the type of working style you have, give an example and then ask for their thoughts on it. E.g. The value I bring is being autonomous and pragmatic so, if there’s a question, what’s worked in the past has been that I triage the issue, do my research and make a judgment call (looping in others if I think necessary). What do you think about that style on your team?
Thanks!
Why did they join? What was it about the Company culture that was attractive to them?
