Any suggestions for lateral associates trying to get integrated? Feels like it’s easy to forget about the new person when you’re not in the office. Trying to reach out and ask for work but also not be too annoying.

What year are you and when did you start?

So you know that this is a weird and dislocating time, because you saw what integration looks like in “normal” times. Don’t give up. There’s light at the end of the tunnel. When (not if) we all get back to the office you will have the chance to connect with folks as you did a few years ago. And I expect that a particular effort will be made to connect with you.

In the meantime I think A3’s advice is excellent. Also make the most of ANY firm zoom or activity. Show up and participate.

Another really important opportunity might lie in your firm’s matter intake process. When someone in your firm opens a new matter how does the firm find out about it?

Following since I’m in the same boat.

I lateraled last March and have been remote during my entire time (a year now!) at the firm.

It’s been extremely difficult to integrate and I definitely don’t feel as integrated as I would have been had we all been working in person.

That said, the best way I’ve found to integrate is to do excellent work and go out of my way to be extremely friendly and outgoing (both up and down the seniority ladder). Try to set up a call with associates around your seniority level who can give you the low down on the firm/your practice group. I’ve found that most people are happy to chat about that (unless they’re slammed at the moment).

Once you’ve built some rapport through just normal work call banter, try and set up a small zoom HH. My firm is offering us a budget to remotely socialize with our peers so if your firm does the same definitely take advantage of it.

Are there any “best practices” as it relates to giving notice? Recently had my year end review. I am a 4th year at mid size firm in NYC my raise last year was $20,000 and my bonus was $10,000. This year my raise was $20,000 and bonus $15,000. I feel like I working extremely hard this year and overall significantly improved (my review had no negative comments), but the additional $5k doesn’t make sense to me. Is this standard or should I say something?
