Any tax benefits of living in NJ and working in NYC?

No. It’s a pain in the ass.

like

No city tax (3~3.8%)

like

You dont pay the 4% nyc city income tax

like

4%

Yea you save that 4%. Also sales tax is lower so you save 2% on purchases. Gas is also cheaper and is pumped for you.

That is all

With new tax laws not as much as before. Yes gas is cheaper - don’t know for how much longer as gas tax will go up because “...NJ did not sell enough gas” asinine

You also will likely get a refund on NJ state taxes since all your income is earned in NY

Are there any pros to staying at a company and getting laid off, vs. proactively looking for a new job and quitting before it happens? I.e., financial (possibility of receiving severance or any other benefits). Or is being laid off just all bad? I don’t know if my job is at risk — I don’t believe it is — but my agency lost some clients and is talking about cost cutting to be safe and get ahead of it. Fwiw, I’m ready for a change anyway.

Also, what would be rent like for 2/3 bhk. Ideally my budget for rent would be <25k. Initially I will be going but in future my family will join me once I am settled. Any points to note or any other gotcha to keep in mind ? Please suggest.

I heard someone make a bold statement that contributing to a traditional 401k versus a Roth 401k were the exact same assuming the same tax rate. I ran the numbers and to my surprise they were not wrong (even considering the earnings). Can anyone explain why a Roth would ever make sense given that income will likely be lower and therefore lower tax rate in retirement?

Anyone have three kids and working in big law? I just found out I’m pregnant with no. 3 and it’s been a lot trying to juggle morning sickness, but based on my experience, I know this is only the tip of the iceberg of what’s to come. My husband and I are elated, but the anxiety of being a mom of 3 kids and working in big law is preventing me from truly enjoying this news. It would be good to know what it’s really like having 3 kids so that I can evaluate how long I really have left in big law.

I'm hoping to eventually pivot into strategy. What’s the best route to get hired as a Strategist?
