One of my best friends is gay and from Dublin. Seems like being gay shouldn’t be a problem at all. The last Prime Minister was gay. They legalized gay marriage by public referendum, so huge support across the board. The biggest thing to keep in mind based on what he tells me is that housing prices are absolutely insane. Worse than anywhere in the United States (including NYC and San Francisco, our most expensive housing markets)
Thanks a ton for the information! Yep, been reading about the housing issue elsewhere also. Definitely cause for concern.
It’s a welcoming place, lots of expats. You can make one or two trips to rural areas as an experience but probably not going to be your main focus. Gay scene is small compared to London or Manchester but a good place to start out. You can come visit London to go wild once settled in.
LGBT* acceptance and support is decent (e.g., same sex marriage since 2015, recently had a gay prime minister as an anecdote, etc.). Dublin has a queer scene like any major city, but it’s smaller as Dublin is a relatively small city compared London, major US cities, etc.
Dublin is becoming more diverse but, ultimately, Ireland is a relatively homogenous society and that will come with some ppl who are close-minded and uninformed. But overall people in Ireland are known for being friendly and welcoming.
Quality of life is pretty great. Fun culture, fun/funny people, good education system and pretty good job opportunities with multinationals headquartered there. Easy to travel throughout Ireland and Europe.
Biggest challenges to quality of life are probably:
1) cost of living (as with most global cities), and
2) it’s a relatively small country, and
3) weather
Housing prices are high and availability is really restricted and low, so that’s a consideration.
Free healthcare, public system is good and it’s typically not necessary to have private insurance.

Thanks all. Quick question - any thoughts on income and ability to save? Sounds like rent will take up 50% of my salary easily.
