Winter is brutal in Chicago, but I love the city. It’s the perfect mix of large city and suburbia all in one. Plus, there’s a “beach” right there.
Also, your money will go so much farther in Chicago. A nice big house in the city is probably half of what a rundown shoebox an hour outside of LA costs.
That is true.
One huge consideration: You’ll get more bang for your buck. I grew up in Chicago and have practiced in LA before. Can buy a great home in chi the suburbs or a brownstone for the price of a LA condo. Winter obviously sucks and it really affects your life because fall/winter lasts for majority of the year, but if you’re okay with it and your wife can be close to her family, then might be worth considering. DM me if you want further thoughts.
I think the QOL boost of feeling like you’re not barely getting by on biglaw salary alone makes up for any downside of the gloomy weather.
I mean … I like Chicago. So, do it. Those are my thoughts. Anything more specific in mind?

I’m in Chicago. Lived in Miami for a long time before. You definitely “notice” winters, regardless of the amount of leisure time you have, so I’m not sure what L1 means.
If you drive, should have a set of winter tires and deal with snow, ice, dirty streets, salt, etc.
If you walk, it gets super cold and windy and uncomfortable. And ruins your shoes. Definitely gotta plan around winter.
Also can’t spend any time outside. With covid, means that you’ll just spend the whole winter in your apt.
I live in Chicago and have for a long time, although originally from the East Coast. It is a great city, but the taxes and uptick in crime are getting a lot of us down. Your money definitely goes further. The winters are like winters on the east coast except they don’t end until April which is the worst. Best tip is to take a least two trips to warm weather. Suburban schools are great, but you pay for them with insane property taxes. City schools are ok for elementary and some great selective high schools otherwise you go private. I don’t love the options for weekend trips. Michigan is great but you need to drive for a while to get to some good spots. But our airports will take you anywhere and are very convenient so that is a plus.
