Any thoughts on Slalom D&A vs any of the big 4 or MBB’s analytics practices? Looking to make switch as work here hasn’t been terribly engaging. Looking to do advanced analytics type of work

K1 - what negative things do people normally say about lighthouse? The thing I really do appreciate about Slalom is the work life balance which I can't say I got at big 4, although it wasn't a pure analytics group I was in so not sure how it compares. Skillsets used vary between each project. From what I've seen, every project is very tool based, for example, a project might just be an Alteryx project or a Tableau project. You're pretty much helping with dashboards at a client or putting together some workflows for a client. Many times people are pretty much just backfilling an open role at a client and are there for months or longer performing the same work.

People complain the most about travel but some people always travel and some never travel so it really just depends. There are also complaints that the pay could be better compared to similar teams at their consulting firms. I haven’t heard that many complaints about hours or work life balance. It’s not necessarily a consistent 40 hour work week and some days are tougher than others, but I think it’s very manageable.

Wait, you’re seeking challenging work and meaning by going TO big 4? Are you insane? That’s where the robots go for template-based slave work. You’ll hate it after the looser culture at Slalom.

Does that apply to analytics practices as well?

I'm in the same boat. Thinking of making a switch to a big 4 analytics group. Haven't been feeling engaged or challenged on these D&A projects and am tired of this Staff Aug model we refuse to admit we have. From what I've researched all the Big 4 have some great analytics groups, some better than others ofc and with varying skillsets needed

I’m curious too. I’m in Lighthouse, but Slalom reached out to me. To be honest, I don’t know much about Slalom D&A so it’s hard for me to make a comparison. I’m decently happy in Lighthouse and honestly feel that any negative things I might feel about Lighthouse are probably true for all consulting firms. Slalom folks, I know you said staff aug, but what is the actual work content and what skills are you using/learning? Also happy to answer any questions on Lighthouse if anyone has questions.

@kmpg 1 are lighthouse and data and analytics different practices or interchangeable terms?

I believe there’s multiple data & analytics teams at KPMG. Lighthouse is one of them

Never was on a staff Aug role except for a short project in my 4 years in ima/dna. That was only because there was nothing in the pipeline for my market at the time. For advanced analytics, I always had this impression that Deloitte and K had good practices in Aim and lighthouse. And compared to McKinsey and BCG, I'm pretty sure Slalom holds little weight. However, since the advanced analytics group is growing rapidly, there's room for anyone to contribute and become a leader. Might have to sacrifice the sexy work for growth opportunities and building out the team

SC1, which market are you in?

I am a M at Lighthouse and someone from Slalom recently reached out. Haven't figured enough about them yet, but the benefits that recruiter mentioned are under par. Might be worth considering if it provides at least two of three things: higher salary, better WLB and better projects. They seem to not be willing about the kind of problems they solve or the recruiter was generally not aware of their capabilities.

Can vouch for probably much better work life balance, great coworkers and actually enjoy spending time with them both at and outside of work. Pay isn't as great, you can try negotiating for more but overall quality of life is much better. Projects probably won't be as interesting though

We transition a lot of grunt data mangling and Tableau to Slalom at my clients, never see them doing anything beyond simple predictive models. They have a lot of good staff Aug (above IPP level) but I never see them doing truly advanced analytics or hard AI. I see good work from D, love to compete with Cap and PwC.
