Any tips for a bank teller trying to move up in finance? Just recently finished school and got a diploma in Business Accounting who's thinking about getting a bookkeeper job if I can and if only entry level positions don't require 5+ yrs exp. Also considering a Financial Services Rep role. Any feedback on pay and what it's like working on either of the jobs? If there's a 3rd option anybody could suggest that would be wonderful.

Do you have any idea what you actually want to do? That’s probably the first thing you need to consider when comparing the two roles. Also, please don’t ever again refer to a degree as a diploma.

This is beautiful, thank you. I can feel the financial struggle too. Flipp app has been my close companion for a while now trying to save up every dollar I can. I'll do my best to get into school again soon and maybe even get another job. Congrats on your journey and I hope I can get some success as well.

An option to consider is as a client service associate at a brokerage firm. If hired, you will need to get your finra licenses. Back-office and operations are other areas to look as well.

like

For sure. Planning to get my Canadian Securities Course license soon

We have hired some tellers into the audit training program. You get to see a lot of the firm over the 3 years of such a program and can then stick around or look for the next role.

like

Woah really? That sounds an amazing opportunity. I want to be able to become a part of that too. I hear an exodus in Accounting companies right now so I'm trying to get into one as well

Apply apply apply, see where opportunities that present themselves take you. The natural progression for retail is tough. While some managers make 300k+ for minimal work, it’s a long journey. Network with your current colleagues, apply for jobs, see where it takes you. Being in a role you don’t like/don’t succeed in, won’t help.

like

Definitely. I'm done with working in retail for most of my life even retail banking. I want to have a better career for myself hopefully getting into corporate. I'll try my best looking for better opportunities too thank you

I’m a investment registered representative with access to multiple investments brokerages.
Have you considered getting investment licensed?

First tip is don’t listen to negative people and do your own credible research.
Are you studying for the SIE? You do not have to be sponsored take it but you do for the series 6,63, 26,65.

Get an internship or entry level position in the kind of finance you want to work in…. Private equity, investment banking, venture capital, distressed debt, risk, trading, etc… Then apply to hundreds of jobs, use variations of your resume tailored to the sector you are applying to and try to network. Good luck 👍

like

Based on your comment on the educational program you completed, that narrows where in finance until you have a 4y or other certs/licenses. HOWEVER, there are lots of entry jobs in the area of “finance” (which is quite a broad umbrella). Many financial institutions have accounting departments with support staff. You’re already work for a bank, so search accounting type of roles. Keep broadening and adding to your knowledge and experience and you can grow/climb up with some focus and dedication.

like

Plenty of options, I sold debt settlement (sales) for a year with a marketing degree, I got head hunted for an Intmd analyst role covering counterparty risk/CCAR which wanted 2-5 years. Best thing is to take a back end operations type entry role and do a year, get head hunted or move to a part of the bank your interested in.

like

Get into an operations role in banking- work hard and you will be amazed what can happen with some talent, grit, and a bit of luck

Better to take a small pay cut (10k) to work with people I know mesh well together at a smaller start up, or stay on at a larger company with higher pay but a team that has absolutely no camaraderie and struggles to work together on the daily? I have been looking at the curriculums for Harvard Business School's Master of Business Administration and Harvard Extension School's ALM in Management. They both have the same requirements (generally speaking) including a capstone course that serves as a field immersion course with the Master's in Management, which is fairly new. If I am not able to gain admission to Harvard Business School, but wanted a similar educational experience to become a consultant, should I attend Harvard Extension?

Had only one call with my TL in first two months. Few weeks later, on workday I noticed that my TL got reassigned. Contacted him and have setup regular catch-ups. He dropped a bomb that he is leaving and I will be reporting to partner. Partner is time poor and no feedback is offered. This is my first consulting role and I feel I am not receiving enough support. Few people are helping to learn the ropes but WFH has exacerbating the problem. How do I get a TL to receive pointed feedback? PwC

Is it a good idea to tell your manager intentions of leaving?

Recently had my review and it didn’t go how I expected. No raise, no promotion. I expressed disappointment but took the criticism I was given to reach my goal in 6 months or a year.

However, there are a number of issues that bother me enough where I want to move on.

The team I am on is small and I know that when I leave, they’ll have a lot on their hands. I only have a couple of interviews scheduled and nothing is solid yet.
