OP, this vastly depends on what your resume says/looks like and from there if it can pass through the ATS algorithm they've set for the position. Seek live contacts if you can and change your resume to match things and words common across the job descriptions for the positions you're applying for.
As someone who's been on the brink of film school for directing and then producing, I can tell you that you're not wrong. Aside from everything is possible through hard work and a bit of luck, know it's extremely difficult to break in without connections and without being young and starting out as unpaid intern/low-ranking PA...
I know a couple account sup's who came over to production and have done well. They had to start over as people mentioned but they were light years ahead of the other associates. And also as a producer you should strive to work on all types of production. Just not broadcast. If you truly become integrated you'll move up much faster than focusing on broadcast.
Sorry, OP, my comment only pertains to breaking into TV production at a broadcast network. If you mean video production dept at an agency, then what SP1 above said.
Thanks all. Yeah, I meant agency side. I'm applying for junior/associate producer roles but getting no bite, maybe because I'm too far in? Too overqualified? No idea. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ will keep trying.
