Advice I’ve gotten: Just ask. And the earlier the better. People want you to succeed and want to help but you have to be an advocate for yourself. You can’t expect to get something unless you ask to make it happen.
When you ask, try to point to accomplishments or the value you add to the agency. It could be going the extra mile on a project or simply your unique POV. As juniors, often the biggest thing we can do early on is show our enthusiasm and willingness to learn. Best of luck OP!
The earlier the better: ask what exactly you would need to do to be considered for an open position if there were one. Most CDs expect an intern, especially one who’s graduated, to be seeking a position. So it can be awkward unless you frame the conversation as you are willing to do whatever it takes to be considered. That way you aren’t asking for a job, you’re asking about expectations—while signaling that you would love a job.
Talk and Show how much valued you brought to the agency during your internship. How your impact is much great than other interns.
Timing is a factor that gets ignored sometimes. You're right to think the the way things are now, it's gonna be hard to get an offer. So when you speak to your CD, try and find out whether there even exist any criteria that you could meet to earn a job. Whether it's anything you have any control over. (If the CEO has said no new hires for the rest of the year, no amount of go-getter attitude is going to change it.) Then you can better decide where to focus, whether that's doing what's best for your book, doing side projects, or spending time trying to get your next internship.
