Any tips for discussing salary at the end of the interview process? Heading to a fourth stage interview. I don’t intend to bring it up, but if it is I wanted to be prepared.

Bring it up. Shows you are interested in them. Ask directly at the start “thank you for taking the time to interview me - will it be possible to discuss salary in this round?” Do not be shy. This is your life. You are a professional. Go get ‘em

likefunnyhelpful

I like hearing a salary range rather than a specific number.

like

I would bring it up even if they don't. When they ask do you have any questions? "Yes, I was wondering what the expected salary range for this position would be?". Always smart to ask in case it's lower than what you're willing to take. No need to waste their time and your time moving forward if salary is too low.

If they bring it up, make sure you do research first so you know what the expected salary would be. "Based on market price for this position and with my level of experience, I was expecting to receive a salary of between $x - $x. Is this something your company would be willing to offer?"

like

I have a different perspective. If the firm doesn’t ask you what you want, I’ve had success in the past of negotiating once I got an offer. Then you know they want you. That, to me, is the time to start negotiating. If they ask you, that’s a different point. But I’m not a fan of the “range” point others are making here.

like

Agreed. Once they love you and have made an offer suddenly their range might have been different than what it was when they started a search and you’re in a better place to get your worth.

If you discuss salary in the first interview it’s likely to not go well. If you say a lower number they might think you’re a less valuable candidate or it will anchor their offer to a number that’s lower than what you could get. If you say a number that’s too high they might might dismiss you as a candidate, but really once they spoke to 10 other candidates and they saw your value that high number might be a realistic offer.

like

Discuss smartly - have a comp in mind but don’t tell the employer. Once you say a number (current salary, expected salary, etc) you’ve anchored the discussion so if they were going to offer higher they won’t. If they make an offer that’s below expectations you can always negotiate base up.

like

If they ask why salary you want or are currently being paid don’t say a number.

I expect the compensation to be in line with the market, I’m focused on the opportunity, I’m looking for a firm/company where I can utilize my skills and experience to add value and grow within the organization, I’m looking at the overall compensation and opportunity without a specific base salary number in mind.

Once they’ve said a number or given you an offer than it’s appropriate to discuss the number, ideally after you’ve had time to reflect. That allows you time to articulate your position and to convincingly say why you should get more if their offer isn’t in line with what you think you should be paid.

I usually ask toward the end of the first round, and I just ask for a general range.

Currently in ID. A recruiter reached out with a plaintiffs side property/personal injury offer. The pay is $100-200k depending on experience. Since I can’t get anymore details out of the recruiter, and don’t have any knowledge of that side of the aisle l, is there a catch here? I always figured plaintiffs side had a lower base pay but got the real money from settlements.
