There is another pretty hot thread on this topic today. I have to tell you, I have been an associate at two of the top firms, and I’ve never heard of this happening. There is always a star associate, and that person gets better work from better partners. But that doesn’t mean clients are suddenly going to pay you at a higher rate. maybe others have a different view, but I would never ask this, and my reviews are stellar.

The only time this would work is if you took a cut and you aren’t really being bumped but rather reinstated.
I don't buy the runway to partner - I am ready now
Why?

This is extremely rare. So much so that I've never seen it actually occur at any firm I've been at, and only have heard thirdhand stories about it happening at other firms, exceedingly rarely, and with some kind of odd set of facts. Firms really don't want to go here since once they do, all kinds of associates / groups would be pushing for it, and the precedent would be set. Even if the person is a star performer, there are a lot of star performers throughout big firms.
Does that partner have a lot of clout? Assuming your firm is structured similarly, it all comes down to the partner committee in charge of all this. Had a colleague who does AMAZING work who tried to get reinstated after taking a cut from lateraling, but it unfortunately did not pan out bc it got outvoted.
I did this. It totally depends on the dynamics of your firm. You need to read the room and make friends with the decision makers. I had an elevator speech for why I deserved it, said it in the right way to the right people at the right time. I got it.
