Don’t.

You’re not gonna change people’s minds. At the same time, think about how’d you feel if they tried to change your mind about something.

If they bring up politics, tell them to you don’t want to talk about it

👋 to the posters recommending electric shock therapy and a lobotomy. That’s not really funny, and if you’d like to talk about those things more extensively then PM me. I don’t wanna derail OP’s question.

OP, what do you mean by “how to talk to”? You probably won’t change anyone’s minds, much like they won’t change yours. If I were you, I’d only engage in good faith, where you felt heard just as you feel like you can hear them.

It SUCKS to feel like you can’t talk to family right now. It sucks to feel like you’ve known someone, been raised by someone, raised someone or were raised alongside someone who (for whatever reason) believes a completely different set of facts than you, and I’m sorry, from the bottom of my heart. That’s painful. I don’t have any tips, other than only engage when you believe in mutual good faith on both sides, and when you don’t, just politely as you can, disengage. It ain’t worth your mental health, babe ❤️🤘

Lol

Disown them. They don't deserve to have someone decent in their lives.

Or, set boundaries. Anything political is off the table and license for you to walk out the room or hang up the phone immediately.

Both should be options. If they don't heed boundaries (option 2), go to option 1.

I’m in the same shoes. I’m pretty far to the left myself and I have family thinking this was all a ploy by the progressive liberals to tank the economy and get Trump out of office.

First, understand that everyone who watches Fox is not necessarily a moron. To get through to people, you can’t be condescending.

Second, from their point of view, the crap CNN is spewing is just as disgusting as the crap from Fox is to you. To get through to people, you need to understand their point of view.

Third, recognize that once you tread into the waters of politics and religion, there is no winning the argument with logic, data, or well constructed arguments. You are not changing their minds, just like they will not change yours.

So, pick a goal that is realistic. For example, I just wanted them to wear masks in public. Which they do now. It frustrates the hell out of me their belief in what is really going on, but find the common ground. In my case, it was our elderly relatives. Let’s not gamble their lives on the tiny chance they might be wrong.

I mean, about 90% have underlying health conditions. Doesn't make it not serious, but also doesn't make them wrong on that one.

People who watch cable TV “news” tend to hold fast views. “Normal” people don’t watch cable TV “news”. Nor do smart balanced people (I know, controversial point of view). They might watch a network news broadcasts, but not the cable garbage. Even Fox only gets a couple million viewers, CNN and MSNBC far less.

Thanks!

I don’t talk to them about anything of importance. (My dad is a Trump/Fox news guy). I’ve learned I can’t change him but I can change how I handle him.

1. Think small. You’re not going to get a paradigm shift overnight. At best you might can get them to question one small thing for now.

2. Pick your battles. If you bombard them with disapproval you will lose credibility fast.

3. Encourage them to travel more (once it is safe of course). Experiences outside of your bubble tend to chip away at the closed mindedness needed to believe Fox.

4. Encourage empathy. Try to provide the perspective they are not getting - the overwhelmed hospital worker, the person you worked with who got laid off due to COVID and now they’re about to lose their status and have their world turned upside down, your black friend who drives a nice car and got stopped by the police 14 times last year, etc. Just casually slide it into the conversation in a non argumentative way.

Or live and let die.

Try finding common ground with them. I bet you’ll find you there is a lot more that you agree on than you think. Don’t let your family relationships suffer because you don’t like news channel they watch.

Both myself and my parents (Hispanic immigrants) watch Fox and none of us think any of these things, lol. Same goes for all the other people we know who watch Fox

I consider myself to be conservative. I watch Fox, cnn, msnbc. Honestly for all networks there’s a small amount of facts. 90% opinion. No news anymore. All opinion.

I’m curious how much other people with similar incomes save/invest a year; I’m a 24M, making 70K a year in a HCOL city. I saved about $12K in my first year of working out of college, and I feel like that’s pretty good but I could’ve done better. My rent isn’t too pricey, but I went on 3 vacations, go out to the bars frequently, and spend pretty freely on food. Anyone care to share their income and corresponding savings for FIRE?

Covid finally got me. 2.5 years into the global pandemic, double vaxed and boosted. Much worse than I expected. I fear if I didn’t have Paxlovid, I would be in much worse shape, possibly even in the hospital. Any tips on resuming work? I fear being too exhausted to complete each work day in the near term.
