I think the key is structure with your business processes. If you have written out instructions on how hierarchy works, what autonomy each person has, etc., you can set the boundaries and how the business runs without having family emotions affect the way business is handled.

Couldn’t agree more that structure and defined roles is crucial!

I work with my father in law. He’s going to transition his business to me over the next 15 years. I’ve brought in about 13 million in two years on my own, and he started me with ten. Assuming all goes to plan I will most likely hand my book to my daughter, nephew, or son if I have one.

Haha, me too. I definitely lucked out on the in law side, and he really helped build my interest in this field, as well as recruited me heavily for about five years of sales jobs where I was mistreated and felt like a number. Even when I started my side of the family thought there was some trick or caveat to it, but as he said “what man would I be more inclined to teach how to fish then the one taking care of my first daughter?” If I end up in the same situation with an in-law I will try to be as much like him as I can.

Our son joined us this year. He graduated from college and started working in May. Passed all three of his security exams already. Clients love him. Joined Rotary and is doing community service. Participated in a breakfast seminar. Is actively prospecting for clients. Works nicely with the other reps. We couldn't be happier.

That’s great to hear! Congrats on successfully integrating him.

I've worked with my father for over 2 years now and I've enjoyed it a lot! I have the mindset that's he is right and I'm here to learn. It's been a great learning experience and the clients are warming up to me quite swimmingly.

Amén!!!! If I don’t get through to him after a year or so and workload is rough, I will likely take some of my earnings and hire an assistant for myself whether he wants one or not. My family time is more important to me than keeping all the money.

Must be nice OP. That’s a good gig for those of you who can get it.

Absolutely know I have a great opportunity! I can continue to struggle alone or join him and I’m leaning towards joining him, even if it means moving to a new city.

I got an email last night from a 7th-grade parent because her son said I mentioned the words "male privilege" in class, and she is very concerned about how that is related to ELA (she said "reading"), and she is concerned about this being taught in public schools. To be clear, I didn't do a lesson on this subject but we did discuss rights versus privileges. I've had multiple parents contact the school/get upset with me because of things like his. It's exhausting... Thoughts?

I recently lost a parent. It seems so unfair that if this happened during the summer I would only have to pretend to be ok for 40 hours a week, as opposed to now where 60 hours is the expectation.

My firm was one of the firms that gave covid bonuses but did not specify whether everyone was getting it. I didn’t make my hours this year because I was on maternity leave and a bunch of my cases ended 1-2 months before I went out so I had lower hours before I started my leave. I couldn’t make up for those lost hours when I was back since I was working from home with an infant because of covid. I didn’t get the covid bonus, which in my mind is ironic considering the circumstances. (Cont.)
