On one side I want to see if they offer me a position, and use that as future reference. But i also don't want them to feel I've wasted their time, and thus closing that door for future opportunities.

All you need to keep the door open is say that you've interviewed for several roles, and after a tough decision you've chosen another option. You appreciate the opportunity to interview, and hope to have the chance to work for them in future.
I've interviewed at the same place twice, with the same manager once removed. And I've declined twice. I had no trouble getting the second interview.
