Great question. I listed a response on another thread, but the key for me has become “get a sweat, forget the time you are actually sweating”
As a former collegiate runner then club rower, I quickly found myself mega stressed about work and continually playing “ok I’ll wake up at 5am” only to hit the snooze and say “I’ll work out at 10pm later tonight”
But by 10pm your zonked from travel and *required* work dinners.
My lessons have been to
- guarantee 20 minutes of sweat a day. You’ll never be working out with plans for a triathlon if you’re never in the gym. The amount of work makes it feel impossible and you’ll be AMAZED at how much a 20 minute gym session will impact your life.
- have a goal. I recently completed a half marathon and that was a great way to continue the sweat. Without a goal, hitting snooze was easy since you don’t look all that different unless you’re working out like a crazy person
- accountable. I sometimes pay my acorns account an extra $5 for every workout missed and when I say $60 at end of month I felt a bit ashamed, and saved!
Hope this helps. Also, find yourself a good vegetable and protein smoothie blend. You’ll become addicted after a workout to it and it helps get you off your bum. I use whey protein, super green food (same as athletic greens but not as silly expensive) and kachava (veggie blend)
Thanks for sharing P1, do you feel your lessons have had any positive impact not just on your personal well-being but also your energy levels and performance at work? Again, appreciate to hear your experiences and tips in achieving that win-win between our professions and fitness!
