Any tips on concentrating? Hard to describe, but sometimes it feels mentally exhausting/heavy ploughing through one long contract after the other.

You need to figure out what works for you. I tend to concentrate better when I turn off my emails and silence my phone. I also got a fidget ring to play with. I used to eat to be able to focus, but that’s too unhealthy. So now I aggressively chew lots of gum.

If the weather is at all tolerable, I force myself outside for a bit in the afternoon doldrums window. Walk my dog, run grab my mail, just sit outside for a minute. The break helps me re-focus once I’m back at my desk.

I keep getting rejected branding agencies for roles despite having freelanced at some amazing places and done positioning work there or at ad agencies. My sense is that they only want people who have worked at Interbrand, Superunion, Futurebrand, etc & aren’t open up outsiders. Is that right? Am I doing something wrong? Should I even be chasing these agencies? I feel like it’s a constant uphill battle and I’m losing the strength to keep going.

Wife and I bought a house at $445k in Arizona this past summer. We’re wanting to stay in it for 5-6 years and move into one of the many new builds in the area. I’m looking down the road at $700-$1m and trying to figure out how people own these houses. The house I’m in now already seems like it costs a lot for upkeep, bills, etc. can’t imagine the next house 😂

Obviously that next house price doesn’t NEED to be that much. But definitely a want with how much house you can get for that price in AZ

Looking for investor/VC intros. I'm CLO of a fintech/startup in the ent./sports industries. We are currently closing out our seed round by the end of the year and will be moving on to an equity raise. We have 3 provisional patents for NFTs and cryptocoin offerings and have partnered with several D1 athletes and musicians to create and sell their NFTs. Additionally, we are in talks with several NIL collectives to serve as their exclusive provider and handler of their payments and NIL objectives.

I recently got a new job at a startup. I have little to no experience in reviewing commercial contracts but the sales pitch was that they are going to bring my area of expertise inhouse and until then, I would learn and help with contract reviews. Initially I thought this would be a great opportunity but now overwhelmed & doubting if I made the right choice. Learning a new area is so hard(!!). Esp so b/c I still get recruiter reach out for opportunities that better fit my profile.

Curious if there are in-house "corporate counsel" (i.e. responsible for drafting/revising/negotiating commercial agreements) who were primarily employment attorneys in private practice? If yes, did you have contract experience in private practice and how did you get it? I'm a V100 MLA fwiw

I’d like to leave my current company soon (complicated). I interviewed with several companies but no offers materialized (someone had more relevant experience or better fit than I). now running out of roles to apply to. There are a few companies I would have not even considered applying to initially (no industry knowledge, too far to commute, not financially stable) but now feel like I can’t be too picky. Should I just apply to every relevant role I see although I don’t think I’ll be happy there

I heard that when Netflix hires outside counsel, it asks a series of questions to determine how credit is given at the firm selected. The goal is to ensure that the “old white hairs” at the top are not receiving/taking credit from the lawyers really doing and managing the lion’s share of the work. Some level of research shows that the real working lawyers tend to be predominantly women/POC who are essentially punished by old school origination systems. Thoughts?

For those who went from private practice to in-house, what are some questions you wish you asked during interviews? I'm coming from a large regional firm, 9 YOE as a patent attorney, just had a first interview for a Senior IP counsel position at a profitable R+D company. Just wondering what I should be looking for or asking as far as red flags, because things seem really good so far.

Contract flow downs question. We are selling equipment to Company X so that they can sell to Company Y. Company Y is trying to push some owner flow down provisions to us. Any general advice when starting new in-house job? What would you have done differently/wish you knew? For awareness I have worked at a large firm and in-house before.

I recently had an in-house interview for a large company where the screening interviewer communicated the salary range and told me that I had to let him know on the spot if the range was not high enough. The amount was lower than I initially expected based on my research into the role and company so I was a little surprised. What is the best response to this question bearing in mind that I would like to make it to the next round while negotiating a higher salary?

I made it through the first interview round with a company. During the interview, they asked if I’d be interested in another legal role and I said yes. I never heard back after that and they hired someone from my firm who is more senior than me for the job I originally applied to. I just saw the other position that they mentioned to me in the interview is not yet filled. Should I apply? I’d like to - I guess my worry is that I may have already been considered for that role.

Need some guidance!

I have an in-house offer. $200k base, 25% target bonus and 25% equity grant. I am currently a rising third year in biglaw.

My recruiter claims that if I take the in-house position, she’d expect that in 3-4 years my base salary would increase to the mid to high 200s, with target bonus and equity each increasing to 40-50% of base.

Is this realistic or is she blowing smoke?

As background, this offer is at a young but rapidly growing PE firm in TX.
