I highly recommend the book “No Ego.” I think it’s important to try and understand where they are coming from and talk candidly to them about it. I had an employee that had a bad attitude and spread negativity. Ultimately we spoke and it was clear she was depressed and felt stuck in life and in her job. I supported her in the ways I could but let her also know there was a boundary, that she couldn’t take it out on everyone else. After offering everything I could and it not helping I strongly encouraged her to find a job that would be a better fit for the sake of her own happiness and also because we simply could not continue to impact the department without change. I helped her by advocating for her to be considered for a role she applied to in the organization and she was able to transfer and got a fresh start. We are people first, but we also have to also consider how our team as a whole is impacted.
I wish more people were like this. Health care is not an easy field to be in, especially after the past 2 1/2 yrs. You advocated for this person to find what was right for her. You took the time and cared enough to help. 👍🏼
Have you tried addressing the complaints
Yes, I have spoken to them more than once
Definitely address what they are complaining about. If it's not about work and it's just personal then you talk to them like a person ask if there's some way to help them be less negative at work. And if not you decide if you want to continue. But if it's complaints about work then getting into what and why is important.
All of these complaints are either personal in nature or just plain silly. They are addressed and discussed so it’s not like the complaints are dismissed at all. It’s just the “woe is me” disposition. It’s exhausting.
Yes. Try fix the things that they are complaining about. Talking to them and asking them to stop complaining is not in anyway a substitute for fixing the issues they voice.
I guess I should be more descriptive. They’re making up false complaints about other employees. Those complaints are being fully looked into. However no basis for a complaint has been found.
