First and foremost, awesome of you to challenge yourself in this new year to be more social. Love it!

As far as advice goes: Practice baby! Being a frequent barfly, I’ll share some tips to help you build your confidence in your first few outings:

1. Go to bars that aren’t “speed bars”, i.e. the ones that are crushed with people and it’s hard for you to place an order. Pick a place that is relaxed with mellow music. Cocktail bars, speakeasies, etc.
2. Sit at the bar. Tables are for families, coffee is for closers, and the bar is for you baby!
3. Talk to the bartender. They are the patron saints of lonely watering hole denizens. If it’s a cocktail joint, ask for a cocktail of their choosing. I refer to this as “dealers choice” when ordering (©️ for my memoirs). I give them a spirit choice (scotch) and the flavors I like (savory) and let them go wild. Discuss it afterward with them. Keep this up throughout the evening to build rapport and ask them questions about how long they’ve tended, etc. The bartender is your guardian angel friend for the evening. Engage them.
3. When picking an initial seat, sit near people, but not right next to them. One seat away is ideal.
4. Do something of interest to you and others. I’ll bring a notebook and write, a deck of cards for solitaire, or my laptop and start working (boozy slides!). People will ask you about what your doing and boom, then you have friends. Even if they don’t, you still have something to do.
Whatever you do, DON’T LOOK AT YOUR PHONE. Your phone is a crutch. Do anything but that. If you don’t feel comfortable having your own activity, bars have TVs with sportsball on. You can look at those. People love sportsball. Good conversation piece.
5. Challenger yourself to talk to the folks on your right or left about anything. “Hi my name is ...” is the best opener in the world. People love meeting randos and talking while drinking. “We met this cool guy at the bar last night and played foosball! You missed out.”
6. If the bar has games, ask people to play with you. People love games.
7. If you plan to go back to the bar, I recommend tipping outrageously. By this, I mean 40-50% in cash. Give this to the bartender personally. State their name and say you enjoyed speaking them and the trouble they went to recommend / make drinks for you. Make this a habit. Your patron saint needs to know your name.

Go forth you aspiring social butterfly! We expect great things. Let us know how it goes and have a round for me!

Love,
Dr. Kearney

I do it all the time, including right now. Talk to your bartenders as if they're old friends. You'll get to know them, they'll welcome the change of pace, other patrons will open up to you easier. Or, if it's still awkward, shoot a friend (or me if you feel like it) a DM/have something to kill the time until the nerves die

Honestly one of my favorite things to do. I made so many friends by going out alone. I became a regular at a few places and the bartenders would introduce me to other regulars. Just find a place you like go a few times consistently and be a good customer and it should work out for you.

Additional Posts in Consulting

Anyone else ever told that you go “too above and beyond” for your customers? For example, I deal with a lot of returns and repairs and sometimes customers don’t have their order information. I offer to help them find it with just some supplemental info. Could take anywhere from an extra 5 to 25 min of digging, depending on what info they can provide. Direct manager? Doesn’t care. Her boss however, made that comment this morning when asked about my daily productivity.

They said they'll reimburse the air tickets, baggage costs etc.. so relocation bonus is not something I can negotiate
