Any tips on how best to draft an email asking for work from a partner who I haven’t worked with and who doesn’t know me? I’d like to get on their matters and want to craft an email that would actually get them to respond and be interested in giving me the work (as opposed to just acknowledging my interest and forgetting about it the next day).

Do you receive notices of new matters or conflict checks run by partners?

why do you want to get on their matters? If someone came to me with a real reason (i.e., I'm interested in the subject matter you work on, and here's why), I would be much more likely to give them something. Also, no one reads more than 1-2 sentences, so if you can't explain why you want to work on their matters in super simple terms, it gets buried.

Look at the type of deal/cases they work on - do they have a specific client, specialty, industry focus that interests you? Point that out in an email. I did that to a partner in another office 6 mo into my first year and I’ve been his go to associate since. If you can’t find something about his practice to point out, find something else in common - same law school, home state, neighborhood and make a little joke about it. Or if you just want to work with them because they’re a rainmaker, just tell them you’ve heard great things and would like to get staffed and learn from them what you can

Moving to NYC from Europe. Gonna make 170-180k pre Bonus. My partner is a student in NYC. How much rent can I afford in the city if I want to still have a fun life. My partner can chip in 1.5 to 2k per month.

Starting a discussion about a promotion and pu bump. I have done was asked by my old boss and had an underperforming direct report.
