Leave. It only gets worse. This is a combination that will suck the life out of you. Until then, try not to internalize it and anticipate as much as possible without driving yourself nuts. Get everything in writing, even if they tell you verbally, send a confirmation email with your understanding. Set boundaries for your time and try not to interact with them as much as possible outside of doing your job.
I know it’s important and obviously a source of income for you and your family, but it is just a job. You are not curing cancer, so do your very best, be responsive, assertive, and clear. But don’t allow for this person who seems like a nightmare and who probably has other issues that they are projecting onto you, to bother you. I agree with above, time to look for another position.
Not Associate 1 but my tips are to set a cutoff time for answering calls. My boss called me at 9 pm last week just to catch up, because we hadn’t spoken that day. It was nothing urgent. Important to set those boundaries now because we’re a bit of a captive audience.
Not sure if this is the same for you, but in my experience part of the stress comes from emotional conversations moving quickly. I find it helpful to slow down when someone speeds up - take your time, ask clarifying questions in the moment, and slowly repeat exactly what they are asking back to them. Disrupting the pace helps take the wind out of things and calm situations down.
That’s a good point. Thanks for the tip!
Thank you all for your comments and suggestions! I have been thinking about leaving for some time now, but then the pandemic happened and does not seem like the most secure time to look for other employment opportunities.
