You’re interviewed with a level in mind so if you negotiate up they might ask you to start over. There’s comp overlap between levels but with 1-4 years between promos, choose wisely.
Ok so is there room to negotiate early promotion ?
Agree with everyone OP. I joined at a L5 a few months ago. I had 8 yoe in a boutique strategy consulting practice. The hiring manager happened to be a L6 so the recruiter personally suggested that I wont get a L6. I took the offer never the less. I am hoping to make it to L6 in 18-24 months. ATB with the decision you make
What role? And TC?
There’s a small possibility you could get promoted at your year mark but you’d have to be superb and show you were under leveled, as well as show your impact across your PA/Google.
I’m wondering what your drive is here- do you have an offer and think it’s too low? Are you just seeing the possibilities?

Back with an offer. Realize I can’t negotiate on level but the TC offered seems low. I’m in a cheaper city on the east coast and would have to move to the Bay Area. Realize the move isn’t immediate due to Covid but evaluating the offer with location in mind. Comp is at 200/yr for L5, how much room do

My only add might be that you can ask but they might not grant it - but have to ask :)
