Any tips on switching up practice areas as a young attorney? I transitioned from a law clerk to an attorney at my current firm (insurance coverage) during the pandemic. I was very grateful for the job during a time when things were up in the air, but I really do not like the work I’m doing. I’m looking to try to move into a different area of law (preferably in the real estate realm), but almost all of my legal experience is in insurance coverage and/or defense.

Do it young while you can still get in at entry level. Once you get a couple years into a certain type of experience, it gets really hard to move out.

I also started off as an insurance defense attorney and knew immediately that I wanted out. Since you’re still young, employers aren’t really looking for substantive knowledge, but transferable skills. Motions, client contact, handling case loads, etc. Use all that in your interviews and add in why you now want to go into x law.

I did the opposite! Real estate to insurance in the middle of my 2nd year practicing after a clerkship. The younger you do it, the better. Firms like attorneys they can mold who haven’t learned bad habits yet. So no experience could actually be a selling point.

What made you make that switch? Which do you like better and why?

For example I know McKinsey has their implementation business where they’ll hire experienced sales and marketing execs. What other opportunities are out there? Is the pay good? What’s the WLB like?

Hey fellow designers,

Is anyone else facing the brunt of working in a service based company and trying to move to a startup product company being dragged down by the 90 days notice period.

I have had a couple of interviews with good startup product companies where the main issue is my 90 days of notice period. Most startups simply run away at the mention of 90 days NP.

Even established product companies shy away at this. Has anyone recently switched despite this long a notice period?

I was very successful as an internaional sales exec at a startup for 15 years before we were bought by a large publicly traded company. The culture shift was dramatic, as was the way that I was expected to work. I was laid off a tortuous 3 years after the buyout.

While I was in some ways relieved (put me out of my misery!) I spiralled pretty hard and after a while started working PT jobs, gig type stuff, etc. while I figured things out, and healed from burnout.
