Do it young while you can still get in at entry level. Once you get a couple years into a certain type of experience, it gets really hard to move out.
I also started off as an insurance defense attorney and knew immediately that I wanted out. Since you’re still young, employers aren’t really looking for substantive knowledge, but transferable skills. Motions, client contact, handling case loads, etc. Use all that in your interviews and add in why you now want to go into x law.
I did the opposite! Real estate to insurance in the middle of my 2nd year practicing after a clerkship. The younger you do it, the better. Firms like attorneys they can mold who haven’t learned bad habits yet. So no experience could actually be a selling point.
What made you make that switch? Which do you like better and why?
