Any tips on transitioning from cyber consulting to privacy program management?

Any thoughts or experiences on this? Any courses or certifications you’d recommend? 1YOE in general cyber consulting.

Thanks!

Hey, Privacy Consultant here. Most of my engagements are Privacy Program Management stuff. For certs, CIPP is typically seen as the best. If you're in the US then the CIPP/US is your go to.

Privacy Program Management in tech is basically an amalgamation of legal, engineering, and business management. The main gist of Privacy is that a company needs to know what data they have, what they are doing with it, and why to avoid legal /market risks. This means a lot of what I've done is either helping make/improve documentation and program governance, and work with teams to figure out what's going on with data.

I think it's interesting as a subject, but you end up working with so many different departments that some projects get bogged down in internal red tape. Considering the importance it has as a regulatory area and for company reputation/market-trust, our group in cyber has been relatively stable with work though.

I think it's a great area but it's also not for everyone since not everyone likes legal issues and that is privacy's main area of concern.

Privacy is one of those fields that remains mystical for some reason, but CIPP can be a very boring foot in the door. I think there are other privacy certs that focus on engineering aspects.

Yep, CIPP

Trying to determine if transitioning from my current role as a Manger, Strategy for a ~100 person Fintech working directly with the C-Suite to a Senior Product Manager at Amazon would be a lateral, upward, or downward move. On one hand my comp would go up and I’d be in a bigger org with defined growth, on the other, I would lose the exposure to executives and influence over our corporate strategy. Any thoughts or experiences would be appreciated! TIA!

For those who have obtained the CFF certification:
I was asked to put together a working plan to obtain my CFF credential. I’m aware of the 2 certificate program (Core and Specialized) through the AICPA that will lead to the CFF. Does anyone have experience in how long it would take to complete the certificates and if there are other necessary or helpful study materials that would be useful? For background, I’m 6 months into working at this firm and have touched a variety of cases.

Is there such things as FP&A positions in Big 4? If so, are there better times to make the change than others (I.e. at senior vs manager)? I’m currently in FP&A and looking to work at a Big 4, or another company that offers the ability to move abroad. My current company and many others I know about do not offer the mobility to do so until much later, which is not what I want. Thank you.

Feeling really insecure and anxious about my finances.

I worked mediocre jobs in my 20s but was diligent about saving and I had an okay nest egg saved up.

It was supposed to be a down payment on a home but unexpected medical costs ate through that super quickly.

I make low six figures and live pretty frugally so no stuggles day to day but here I am in my late 30s and im essentially starting from scratch again and it feels really bad 😓

4YOE in consulting got shafted on promo to M with pay. Would you take a 7.5% raise to a startup company with 15% bonus (upwards of 30% for high performers which at Big4 been rated consistently high) plus stock. They mentioned they may have an additional increase start of CY and in process of growing out whole new org so potential to really accelerate into strong leadership roles. Just at point where I feel under appreciated and want to try something new.
