Any tips on transitioning from large non-profit law firm to mid-large private practice? I currently practice primarily consumer law and bankruptcy. I previously practiced housing law. I've only been practicing for 2 years. However, prior to law school I was in corporate banking and finance doing financial analysis and M&A due diligence work for about 10 years. I would ideally like to work in corporate/finance/business transactional law.

What is a large non-profit law firm?

If you know consumer and credit regulations you could get a job in a financial regulatory group. With your prior history you can tell the truth - you wanted to get a different perspective but prefer your old career track

When I first got my job 3 years ago I settled with the title I have now (Marketing Coordinator) even though it’s not really fitting. I’m the sole marketer for 3 companies. I have 7 years of experience and answer only to the C-suite. I’m honestly juggling more work than 1 person should be doing and that makes my title/salary ($54K/yr) seem insufficient. What I’m wondering is, am I being unreasonable wanting a better title/salary and does my title really matter when asking for a higher salary?

Looking for advice please! I’ve got an appraisal coming up and my boss has said that as I’m “exceeding expectations” for my current role, he’d like to talk to me about an expanded role with new opportunities. The reality is I’ve got a 2-year old and am really struggling, especially with WFH. It’s not just a workload thing, it’s also headspace. I know deep down I’m not in a position to take on any more for the foreseeable future. How do I say this without jeopardising my career?

I’ve worked at the same firm for almost 5 years. I’ve received an end of year bonus of varying sizes- my first year, my paycheck was doubled. The last 3 years, I’ve received 25k-30k bonuses. This year I received a bonus in April (20k) and one in July (15k) but I still expected an end of year bonus. I didn’t get it even though this has been my most profitable year yet. Should I just assume those earlier bonuses were INSTEAD of an end of year bonus or should I ask my boss?

I’m a 5th yr at a mid-size (~100 lawyer) firm. My practice area is slow here, so I’m interviewing. Most of the roles I’m interview for are at big firms...but I’m worried about the increase in billable hours. (For context, my current requirement is 1600, I’ve literally never billed over 1700). How painful will it be adding 100-300 hrs? Has anyone else made this sort of jump?

Curious if any partners are aware of any convos at the biglaw level about associate comp increases / cravath scale tweaks. Not trying to be greedy, truly just curious. We had a couple back to back with the last increase in 2018. Covid appreciation bonus seems like an acknowledgment of this, but it was a one off. Record profits and inflation possibility makes me think it has to be on minds.

I have a state job and recently I was nominated by my boss to be selected for a two-year certification curriculum as a Certified Public Manager. Has anyone had experience with the particular certification? Is it lucrative to take it or would it be a waste of time? I work for the State because it gives me more time with my family but as I am sure you can understand, I would like to make more money. Would a C.P.M. help me in that pursuit?
