Any US associates practicing in US biglaw firms abroad, particularly in Europe? Would be interested in hearing how your firms handle these type of roles. Are they a viable career path or just something you can do for a few years? How’s the comp? What’s your role like?

I am not but got an offer in London a few years ago from a major UK firm. Comp was MUCH lower, and ultimately declined the job for a few reasons, a major one being comp.

BL is getting better at matching associate pay. Not dollar for dollar, but much better than it was pre-pandemic because they were losing their associates to American firms. Bad news is I’m told the hours in British Big Law Firms are starting to be almost as bad as their American counterparts

Magic circle firms in London pay NYC market + COLA for debt and equity capital markets and maybe other roles (M&A?). You can do your whole career there, not just a temporary thing, though I think partnership prospects are a bit slimmer than if you stayed in the US and your career mobility is limited - it’s basically the same role and roughly similar pay in about twenty or so shops (magic circle + US firms like Cleary, Latham etc).

Cannot compare like for like to NYC as I’ve only ever worked in London, but it seems like it’s standard biglaw hours. There’s a little more respect for weekends and holidays because of the British cultural influence but I wouldn’t say it varies by that much. Cap markets is not the spiciest field, but it is pretty interesting!

There are posts about this every week. It’s not realistic outside of London.

All my six-figure salary consultant friends are ranting about how poor they feel right now because their IRAs/portfolios are down. Neither my husband nor I are good with change and when my husband and I went for the ultrasound he nervously asked "she's too sick to eat anything other than her vitamins and water, is it ok for her and the baby to go without?" Our doctor just smiled and replied "don't worry, baby takes" I don't know why but that was so funny to us. It kind of became our mantra as we navigate and move our life around that "baby takes," its made it feel more Us vs Change rather than Me vs Him. Thought I'd share

Hi everyone, I am looking for advice on getting to the same company but in a different country. I had an internship at multinational FMCG company in purchasing in country 1 (5 ys ago). I then went studying abroad to country 2 and stayed doing the jobs which came with the visa - sales/accounting/marketing but all for really small companies (20 e-s max). I keep dreaming about getting back to FMCG co but in country 2. Applied directly/chatted to ex coworkers in country 1 - no luck. Any advice?

I don't know who needs to hear this, but I have a few former classmates and colleagues sweating over lateral interviews. Take a deep breath and relax.

First, doing these interviews does not define you as a person.

Second, take it one day at a time; if they are moving forward, they see something in you.

Third, remember that the people interviewing you are human beings. Connect with them, be personable.

Waiting on raise/bonus info but can’t help but wonder if I could be making $100k more at a larger firm and working similar hours. I put a premium on the people I work with and have gotten a good rhythm here as well as built up a good rep so far. For reference I have billed avg. 180-200 hrs a month. Any insights?
