1. Don't let sticker shock get to you. Let's say 5k over the next 5 years on something you wear everyday is $3/day.
2. Don't know much about baume - I would view more as an older persons watch, but someone can correct me. What's budget?
3. Don't know grey markets but buying (reputable) used is fine
4. Don't buy a quartz watch
@OP I bought a Baume Clifton from Jomashop and love it
BM is a good company with rich heritage but unfortunately their watches do not hold its value. If your budget is 5k highly suggest looking at 2nd hand market, I personally do. Agree with A1, never buy quartz. Try to get mechanical or automatic but never quartz. Not to say quartz is bad, but they also don't hold its value. Since you're 23 and don't want to look like a prick, then I suggest to move past the ones with the huge face, rule of thumb dinner plates belong on the table not your wrist. Also metal bands can be flashy or cliche depending on the brand. Leather is always a subtle option which will tone down the watch. Watchrecon is a pretty good place or even stroll around 47th if you're in NY.
If sub 5k go with an omega. It's the first time I spent money on a watch and I still feel happier than wearing my latest buy which is a lot more. I am a watch guy and I get attached to the time I bought it versus the time it tells. My omega sea-master is the watch I wound be most upset about losing.
Omega Seamaster or Planet Ocean
A lot of people giving good watch suggestions on here, but remember you're the one wearing it at the end of the day. If you like the look and feel of the Baume more than a Rolex/Omega/IWC then go with it. Mine gets just as much wrist time as my vintage sub
I don't know anything about watches so novice-friendly advice is appreciated
Budget is sub-$5k. Anything above that and I'd feel like a prick (I'm 23).
Grey markets are fine. I've always bought used from forums without any issues: Www.watchrecon.com
Thanks. Definitely going for leather. Have any brand recommendations that keep their value? Also by that do you mean they hold up or are you talking depreciation?
Since all watches are massed they don't really appreciate in value but instead depreciate( with the exception of Patek's supercomplication, or the James Bond Rolex and the alike). For vintage I prefer Rolex, omega, longines, lecoultre, or even Cartier. One of my personal favorites is the Cartier basculante, it's their version of lecoultre's reverso. It's less we'll know but hard to find.
How'd you lose it?! I always wanted the omega planet ocean with the orange bezel but haven't done anything significant to warrant it yet.
A. Lange & Sohne all the way.
Find a used IWC Pilot or Portuguese. Classic watches with a leather band. A. Lange are beautiful, but likely out of the price range
