Anybody accepted an offer from firm A, subsequently received an offer from firm B, and then had to tell firm A “hey sorry nevermind” ?… asking for a friend

Yep. Hard not to burn firm A bridge, but if it’s best decision you have to do what’s best for you… the firm would dump you immediately if things go south, so treat yourself queen

Yep. My outside recruiter laid the ground work. They were surprisingly cool about it.

It happens. Don’t expect to get another offer from Firm A and consider the bridge burned but do what’s best for you. The law firms all will act in their own self interest.

I backed out once. Decided to tell firm in person. Took a 45 minute tongue lashing that was so complete, epic and thorough, that I am still to this day impressed (not mad) at the managing partner. This was devastating beat down and undressing that was delivered with almost a smile. I took it and a lot of what he said about being a man of your word was true. I’m still glad I didn’t go there though.

You hadn’t started but willingly took the verbal beating of a lifetime????

Thanks, all! This is what I though (read: “hoped”) you’d say.

Yes fine, unsure a bridge would be burned unless your friend already accepted an offer from firm A. If he hasn't then surely firm A can understand he has options. He doesn't want to use offer But to see if firm A can sweeten their offer? Or give them a chance to respond?

lol

For those of you with student loans, has your strategy changed now that mortgage rates are increasing? I have $230k in federal loans. I’ve been saving during the student loan pause and will have $180k as of 12/31 when payments resume. I was going to put most of it to student loans, but now that mortgage rates are surpassing my student loan rates, I’m second guessing this. Some more details on comments.

She will respond that simple assignments are “too hard.” At this point, I’m not sure what she thinks her job is. She is assigned to me and a partner, but it’s the same for both of us. Milbank matched DPW scale. Plus/minus 50% for associates with above 110% or below 80% “utilization” through 9/6 (including pro bono and legal work for firm). To be paid by Oct 30. December bonus expected to be no less than last year. Good for management and consistent with (imho) strong leadership during COVID.
