Anybody else a bit upset about the new expense report policy? Feels like a shitty strategy to penalize work from home

It's a really tactical rule from the operations team - essentially forcing a win-win for them, only two things can happen: office attendance increases OR meal expenses costs saved
All to the detriment of our collective wellbeing and sustainability

Way to ruin something that brought a tiny bit of joy to otherwise miserable nights of work. And I’m saying this as someone who comes into the office regularly. So much for caring about employee sustainability

likefunny

It really doesn’t make sense, especially with all the extremely high burn DDs going on where going into the office is only feasible 1-2x a week or not at all. And with COVID and flu season coming up…

likefunny

I tend to work from home on days I know are going to be long and miserable, when it would actually be useful to expense dinner, so this sucks

likefunny

guess I will be blocking off time to cook/clean up now that I don’t have the luxury to eat at my desk

likefunny

I echo the others that it’s ridiculous…I know a number of other firms that allow remote/wfh meal expensing just like the office. Working is still working regardless of location and we get burned to a crisp here…

likesmartfunny

Hate to ruin the fun by actually reading the email, but did anyone notice that it didn’t take away expensing meals if you’re working from home? It kind of explicitly said that you just need your PL’s OK. Appreciate that it’s fun to pretend like the sky is falling but maybe have a little perspective? Working in an office where there are literally no options for food (other than the delightful Famous Amos cookies) is not the same as working from home where presumably you have access to a kitchen. If the work load is so bad that you don’t have time/energy to make food then I think that would be the exact situation when expensing would be encouraged.

likesmart

This is false. There are a good amount of clients that require pass-through expenses. We also are always at risk of audits. The spirit of the expense line for clients is most definitely not to fund our dinners when we are working from home.

like

I assume some took too much advantage of the free meal policy and that is the answer. Maybe the fact we are not running that hot lately also plays a role.
Requiring approval in high burn projects is similar to what I know from competition. Some even have a maximum of 1 per week.
So instead of thinking our policy is bad, it's more like our previous policy was very generous and now goes back to normal.

likefunny

I assume we’ll see what the messaging is like soon at next CVC and interested to hear what the tone is from management. But depending on the PL, this could either just be a formality, or a huge problem. If I’m on a high burn project and have to block off time to cook every day my teams are gonna hate it, but I have to eat…

According to the agenda, it doesn’t look like it will be addressed… bummer that we won’t even get an explanation.

Very upset! Doesn’t make sense at all.

funny

The majority of replies here don’t seem to make sense in the context of the average work hours being reported (~50).

like

CV14, combining your reply about the legal risk and this reply about CV doesn’t disallow WFH meals, I got it that you want to convey how generous is CV! Bearing the risk to get into legal trouble while not disallowing us to expense WFH meals 🤔

Remember the “perk” is not any surprise, that is stated within our offer letter stage. so it’s baked in people’s decision process already.

like

This is what the policy was pre COVID and has far more to do with the potential for a client audit, which do actually happen.

Is it really so hard to boil some water to cook pasta and warm up some sauce with some fresh vegetables? You don’t need to cook a gourmet meal every night - there are so many cookbooks out there for quick meals along with grocery shopping on the weekends. #lifeskills.

Then considering how many changes have happened over the past 3 years, you’d think they could amend their contracts so that it specified dinners for long hours / late nights rather than in office dinners. Clients really shouldn’t care about the difference there.. they’re aware that work from home is a thing now.

like

Yeah this is a real bummer. Any theories on what instigated this change?

It’s probably because more and more people were taking undue advantage of the policy

Looks like the firm “supporters” are inaccurately “reporting” posts that demonstrate a diversity of thought (i.e., share any perspective that is negative from theirs). Shame on you for doing that and stopping staff from sharing their perspectives in 3rd party open forum that is not officially affiliated with CV in any way. This bowl isn’t meant to be a place to toot your own horn, CV. It appears to give a voice to staff in a safe place. See posts for a few that have been recently reported.
