Anybody else have trouble trying to create a professional background at home for video conferencing? I finally gave up and ordered a backdrop from Amazon!

What’s wrong with your kitchen table? Not understanding the need to create/buy a professional background.

That's what I'm thinking! Students are going to know you're at home, why make it look like anything else? Unless you want to get creative with Zoom, but Zoom lets you blur the background as well.

I don’t worry about a “professional background” too much. In my estimation, this is a crisis. I’m not try to make it seem like I’m not working from home, in my PJs, in my bed or couch or outside in my favorite deck chair. I also don’t want to give the impression that learning needs a particular setting. Some of my best aha moments have come while lounging. Just my take😊

I move around to different areas in my house and backyard so kids can see me! I feel it helps us connect. I just make sure the wine rack is out of view!

I went with a book shelf or the wall with family photos. This year as I shifted to video assessments, I cautioned students to be consider their background, especially if recording in their bedrooms, adding that I didn’t want to see all of their Justin Bieber posters. Now I’m thinking about getting one for the background.

Why not.

What platform are you using for conferencing? On zoom you can just upload a screensaver from your saved photos and use that as your virtual background.

I downloaded a classroom scene with a large periodic table (I teach chemistry). I had to flip it to get the mirror image (insert into PowerPoint, rotate and save as JPEG). Lighting and distance matters with a virtual background or you can meld into it.

Zoom allows you to choose a virtual background.

I think I’d just find a wall, or hang up a sheet behind, or on a door. This is uncharted waters, and I’m sure the kids are just happy to see you!

It’s my home, they know it. Not wasting money on something that is completely unnecessary. They know the situation.

I’ve read some research that suggests kids value authenticity so if it looks like your house that’s probably better.

Flat grass green paint and a whiteboard with a painted cork side and a white side on a easel creates a perfect green screen for virtually any backdrop for zoom. I create images, download videos or share my desktop behind me using a second screen and an app like free OBS open broadcaster studio. Run your show! OBS takes learn time YouTube!!!

A teacher gave us an idea. It you tape chart paper to the back of your sliding glass door, you can use it like a whiteboard with dry erase markers. I’m using a blank wall in my kitchen and use painter’s blue tape to tape to the wall.

Wow we are not to this point yet, but I have not really given it much thought. We’ve used Microsoft Teams to conference as a school and I like a dummy just dat on the sofa, but I did get dressed!

If we ever get to that point, and I don’t think we will, I will probably sit at my kitchen table or on my couch.

That’s the least of my worries.

Uhm it’s my house I don’t need a backdrop. I’m not going to waste time or money unnecessarily. I work in my home office / home gym and wouldn’t care about conferencing in any other space.

I'm just sitting on my brown couch. WE ALL are going to be comfortable.

Much like at school, I've got a whiteboard as my backdrop. Kids commented on how they were not surprised and found it comforting.

I use screencastify and video my computer screen with my voice over. When I zoom with my kids its from my couch. It is what it is. There is no pretending I'm still in school.

Nah...I wouldn't worry about it. Make it look too good and you will be adding fuel to the pinheads' fire who claim that teachers earn too much. Set up a table in front of a grungy garage wall and have at it.
