Yes, and not just short term illness. After years of no sleep, high stress, and not having time to eat right/work out my entire body is having a breakdown. We read all about how those very things lead to early death and have multiple long-term health consequences that we think won’t happen to us. But they will. And have to me.
Yes, I got shingles from all the stress wearing down my immune system. I worked from home while I had shingles and it was, ironically, a "never been done before feat" project that went smoothly because I wasn't working in the insane open office space.
I got shingles as well, and hives. :(
And then my bosses say “you’re getting sick a lot, we’re concerned the work isn’t getting done."
Same
Yes. All sorts of symptoms appeared, just feeding off of each other for six months until I ended up in the ER twice in 2 weeks. During that six months I asked my boss for help with workload so I could have some time to heal. He said “sure, whatever you need,” but soon after that conversation berated me for not doing enough work. After four months of searching I FINALLY found a less stressful job. Since then all medical problems have gone, I’ve lost 30 pounds (I had gained 50 at the stressful job), I’m off all medication & I’m much happier. I probably won’t be winning any lions at this new place, but I don’t care. Lions don’t matter if you’re dead.
When my boss reprimanded me after he said he would help, I realized that I was not a person to him. Simply a cog. I started my search then. And after the 2nd ER visit, I really ramped it up. Couldn’t afford to just quit because I needed the health insurance from the job that made me sick
Yes. It’s not worth your health. Do what you need to do even if it means quitting
YES. And speaking from the other side, I wish I’d have quit sooner. No job is worth physical and/or mental health!
Yes, mind and body are connected
“Don’t spin out. Just take this assignment we gave you Friday that should normally take a week and make sure it’s to me for feedback Monday morning. Never mind your PTO”
I had stress migraines where I would see stars across most my vision and have trouble with syntax, speech, and thinking clearly. Emails came out jumbled. They only came on at times superior, who screams at lower level employees, assigned a task with an insane deadline. Quit and have never had one since.
Yes, mostly my coping mechanisms were making me sick. Should have just quit
Yes.
I had a blood test that told me I had leukemia then went to an oncologist to tell me my body was in constant defense mode because of stress. That was a fun job
I just threw up for the 3rd time this month from crazy hours and the anxiety it caused. Yes, it does mess you up physically.
A hard way to learn nothing comes before health.
Yes. Awaiting legal status / green card so unable to make a move until then. Toxic leadership... sick always not sleeping no time to attend gym classes so health is deteriorating...
Yes. Happening to me now. I will be taking a big breather after this project.
@AD 2 what were your manifestations of the stress? Mine is constant flu/catching everything around me. Not to mention the the fatigue
When i get stressed my shingles flare up. Absolutely painful and terrifying. I have to constantly remind myself that nothing actually matters
I was actually vaccinated for both chicken pox and shingles when i was younger and have had both years after being vaccinated. No idea what’s wrong with me
I once lost 15 pounds in two weeks because of stress at work and not being hungry enough to really eat.
Thankfully transitioned off that account very shortly after.
I left a job and immediately stopped grinding my teeth while I slept
Yes. I couldn't take it anymore as I was suffering physically and it was causing a strain at home. I just walked in and quit.
And I just landed a new gig today in a field I'm super passionate about.
