Anybody familiar with coping around rejection sensitive dysphoria (RSD)? I have ADHD, and the therapist believes I exhibit symptoms of RSD,i.e, worrying too much about every single comment a client made ( people pleaser) ? Doesn't criticism or perceived rejection cause emotional pain or anger? I would love to hear your thoughts on this.

I haven’t heard of this one before and I’m not a doctor obviously, but I wonder whether cognitive behavior therapy or exposure therapy would work? Basically convince the brain over time to counteract the flight or fight reaction.

Yes, so much yes. ADHD too and apparently they go hand in hand. Recently diagnosed so I’m looking for coping tips too

Omg yes ! I am super sensitive of slightest negative comments. Sometimes these could be from a relative . My cousin once said I’m a people pleaser and it hurt me so much. I still cannot get that out of my head!! Oh and I think I might have adhd too! I’m 90% confident but don’t know how to go about solving it

like

I️ relate 🙃 it hurts me so much when people I’m close to call me a people pleaser, so I️ try not to noticeably be a people pleaser.. which really just makes Uber-people-pleaser

Are you ambidextrous or ambi-left or hand dominant? I think that can be true. Do you have trouble making any decision, even the smallest decisions? There may be a spectrum of RSD. Like if you had to endure a lot of rejection in life, you can be accustomed to it, and not properly getting over all of your past rejection could cause any little hint of it to agitate past rejection trauma. I have some similar qualities but its more tied to long waiting periods after interviews. Ive been rejected so much that I automatically think the worst after an interview.

Im just glad i am not working full time and going to school part time anymore. I definitely had more of those feelings then. I definitely understand the perpetual stress caused by family members who will bring up your past to prove a point. This doesnt always help, but maybe you could them this in whatever manner is suitable for your communication style - "look! That screw-up was over xx years, ago, when will you let that go, i am not a robot. I am not perfect, people makes mistakes. Everytime you reference prior traumatic experiences, it only sends me into further oblivion. I dont like telling you about things because, you stay stuck on this same bs with your morbid version of constructive criticism. Either say something uplifting, or dont say anything at all." Anyway, ive been laid off in the past as well, also 10 years ago. That ish sucks terribly. It definitely causes me ptsd until today. I also think the trauma causes me to stay in positions that are bad for my mental health longer than I should based on fear of the unknown. Its something I need to work on.

Definitely so, I feel criticism like a physical blow sometimes. Didn’t learn it was an ADHD thing until a couple years ago. The good thing about depression-induced apathy is that I feel like a lot less now.

Just now learning about RSD.. do you feel some of the medications for ADHD have improved or worsen rejection sensitivity? I’ve definitely shown signs of RSD (some more obvious internally and others more obvious to friends/acquaintances). I’ve been debating switching off adderall for ADHD for a while because I️ think it makes me more sensitive and stressed. Just curious how others have felt, because I’ve noticed I️ feel less pressure/stressed after not taking adderall. But that quickly snowballs, and my roommate will suggests I️ start taking my adderall again

C1, off topic but try vyvanse. I had similar side effects with adderall that aren't as strong on vyvanse

I have BPD, and I fixate on every perceived emotion or reaction. DBT has been an absolute lifesaver for me, I recommend therapy but also the DBT skills workbook you can find at a bookstore or Amazon or whatever. Also, radical acceptance.
