1. Install MetaMask and get the extension on your browser OR (more secure) get the Coinbase extension and connect your CB wallet
2. Add funds to your MetaMask or CB wallet from wherever you store your crypto. Moonpay is also a potential alternative option to buy NFTs directly with Fiat for those who are super new to crypto
3. Find the project you want to mint and check their Twitter, join their discord, check their website, etc. and make sure it's something you want to mint and you know the details surrounding drop date and type.
3a. Note: you can find some upcoming projects on rarity.tools website but best way is to follow a bunch of people on crypto Twitter and/or lurk around blue chip discords i.e. BAYC, Cool Cats, etc. Most discords have a channel for shilling or other projects discussion.
4. There are different types of mints. Traditionally there would be a drop date/time where you connect your wallet (from step 2) to the website, click a mint button, set gas to a high level (gas tends to spike during mints), sign the transaction and pray it goes through.
4a. More projects are now trying alternative approaches such as whitelist spots to avoid gas wars and give preference to those interested in the project early and avoid whales buying out a large percent of the supply due to ability to win "gas wars" due to quantity of ETH. If the project is a whitelist (full transparency i haven't actually minted anything in a while so this is a hypothesis DYOR), i believe your wallet address is added to a list and only wallets on the list are allowed to mint when the project drops.
4b. Depending on the project, you can mint via the website or directly from the contract. If it's directly from the project they will have a step by step on how it works in the discord.
5. Often, it's a better option to buy on secondary post mint rather than mint. If you want to do this, you can find the project you're interested in on Opensea.io (confirm official opensea project link via the discord, as there could be scams out there), connect your wallet to opensea, and hit buy now or make an offer (convert ETH to WETH using Uniswap, matcha.xyz or similar exchange) on the NFT you like!
