Hiii! Just had my final interview and only got to ask one question because it was times up. Was hoping to use that time to show my excitement for the role and company. We used up the time discussing my role and him connecting it to role im applying for. At the end I only got to ask about company culture and quick goodbye. 4th year big law associate here (the most jr. of the group). I feel as if I’m treated as a senior associate’s personal assistant. I just received my performance review and my manager recommended ~15% raise and ~20% bonus, however, management only ended up giving me a 5% raise and 14% bonus plus I am expected to considerably expand my role, but no promotion. I am a senior analyst working in structured finance at a mid/large bank working ~60 hours a week and I make $85k. Is this normal? Does anyone have any advice to negotiate the raise to at least meet inflation?

Did you ever had this feeling of not fitting in? People (including non-legal staff) in my team just ignore me. I know I made some mistakes, but resenting a trainee for that reason seems unfair. Just went to farewell drinks of an associate and only two persons out of 14 actively engaged conversation with me. With the rest I had this feeling of forcing everything and of being the awkward one. People were referring to funny stories on cases we’re working on and that I never heard about.

Can we be honest for a second? No one has a clear policy for how we should be billing our time and no one wants to ask. I’ve heard perspectives ranging from, “a good faith estimate at the end of the week is sufficient” to “you need to have a timer going at all times and if you don’t turn it off when you pee, you’re committing an ethical violation”... also, “Bill anything that moves the deal forward” vs. “You can’t bill for collating documents. That’s not legal work.”

Some partners are so stupid. In a free market system, if you want the good associate to work for you, you need to be a nice person. Otherwise, I have enough partners to feed me work and you’re the source of your own problem.

Any insight on direct lending specialty finance AIP group at Milbank?

Need some advice from my biglaw family. I’m a 2nd year lit associate. I will draft briefs and motions that I feel are pretty good and when I get them back from senior associates, they’re sometimes completely re-written. I’ve been assured I am not a bad writer and that “it will come” but the changes these seniors make are just SO GOOD. So my question is, how have people here become better legal writers? Is it just a matter of giving it time? I want to write like these senior associates write!
